Job Name: Application Architect

JFS OIS supports multiple business units. The hired Application Architect is responsible for applying the MASA (Mesh App and Service Architecture) Architectural model design principles and prescribed patterns to re-architect SETS, (Ohio's Child Support Application). The Application architect proactively and holistically leads and supports the analysis, design and implementation activities performed by the development team in collaboration with OIS counterparts.

 

They understand the concepts of microservices architecture, human centered design, domain driven design and the process of identifying the right level of granularity to re-architect legacy applications to enable digital business transformation by implementing innovative solutions. Solutions include projects, systems (including applications, technologies, processes and information) and shared application services.

 

The Application Architect provides useful information to create solutions with desired characteristics and captures decisions into patterns and practices that can be reused to make it easier to implement systems that run well and are easily maintained. The Application architect works collaboratively with OIS technical teams and maintains required architecture standards and guidelines for innovative solutions that align with future state as defined.

 

The Application Architect will be reporting to Application Development Section Chief working in collaboration with Solution Architect and with vendors and business strategists/process owners/SMEs comprise of Business Unit managers for Office of Child Support. SMEs are within OIS at various roles eg: Application Development managers/leads, Enterprise Architects, Requirements teams, Client Partners, Operations leads.

 

The Application Architect will demonstrate competencies across four key dimensions:

 

Interpret Business/ Organization Needs

• Translates detailed business and technical requirements into a logical architectural blueprint to achieve business objectives and documents all application architecture design and analysis work

• Understands business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state) and determines corresponding enterprise solution designs and change requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes

 

Assess Technology

• Monitors the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by the application, or misalignment with business requirements

• Supports development team in end-of-life product initiatives to maintain, refresh or retire services, or systems, including applications, technologies, processes, and information

• Understands emerging technology trends and disruptions and their practical application to enable new and evolving business and operating models

• Analyzes the technology industry, competitors, and market trends, and determines their potential implications for a given solution

• Analyzes the business-IT environment to detect critical deficiencies, legacy, and technical debt, and implements solutions for improvement

• Evaluates and conducts proof of concepts as needed for the selection of software products and works on standards

• Consults with application and infrastructure development projects and products to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture and makes design modifications

 

Apply Technology

• Acquires domain knowledge and produces superior domain driven design models that handle application complexity in a very effective and efficient manner

• Follows an iterative approach to develop Domain Models to ensure the evolution of the enterprise solution portfolio from current to future state

• Conducts comparative analysis on a broad range of technologies, platforms, and vendor offerings to drive targeted business outcomes

• Creates architectural designs to guide and contextualize solution development across products, services, projects, and systems, including applications, technologies, processes, and information

• Works closely with the program management office (PMO) or project management office to ensure the execution of plans corresponds with what is being promised throughout the project or product lifecycle

 

Provide Domain Guidance

• Provides deliverables like best practices, architecture designs, patterns that can be re-used and enhanced to support modernization efforts

• Supports a community of practice (CoP), guiding and helping agile teams, product owners to align with the overall enterprise architecture governance and assurance

• Defines the principles, guidelines, standards, and patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision

 

Skills

• Knowledge of various backend development languages like C#, Go and Python

• Knowledge of various database technologies like MySQL, MongoDB, SQL Server and Oracle

• Knowledge of various frontend web development languages like JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

• Knowledge of various aspects of a technology architecture like integration, network and security

• Understanding and knowledge of Architecture Design Principles, Integration Frameworks and Patterns

• Knowledge of microservices and cloud architecture

• Understanding and knowledge of system development life cycle methodologies (such as waterfall, spiral, agile software development, rapid prototyping, incremental, synchronize and stabilize, and DevOps)

• Understanding and knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)

• Knowledge of different modeling languages (such as UML and ArchiMate)

• Understanding of IT standards and controls

• Excellent understanding of application development methodologies and infrastructure and network architecture

• Excellent analytical, planning, organizational and technical and skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Credentials and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information technology, engineering, system analysis or a related discipline, or equivalent experience; Master's degree preferred.

• Minimum of five years of experience in at least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical or infrastructure architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management or cloud development

• Minimum of two years Solution Architecture experience that includes architecting Cloud Native applications and one-year Application Architecture experience.

• Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms, and processing environments

• Good understanding of strategic and emerging technology trends, and the practical application of existing and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models

• Good understanding of product management, agile principles and development methodologies and capability of supporting agile teams by providing advice and guidance on opportunities, impact, and risks, taking account of technical and architectural debt

• Experience developing architecture blueprints, strategies, and roadmaps

• Experience delivering presentations to senior-level executives and technical audiences

• Experience in coaching and mentoring
