JOB DESCRIPTION:

Seeking experienced attorney for Client's residential mortgage business serving the Global Wealth & Investment Management division, which is comprised of the Client Private Bank and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management businesses. The role is focused on supporting complex, custom mortgage transactions for High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth individuals who often structure credit through trusts and other investment vehicles (partnerships, LLCs, etc.). Success is defined by the ability to make risk assessments and prioritize work in line with the Bank's risk tolerance; and to communicate legal and business risk advice effectively to all partners in the mortgage life cycle (including client-facing teams, underwriters, compliance partners, outside counsel, and senior executives) so that escalations are swift and decisions are informed. Comprehensive understanding of the mortgage origination rules and regulations is required and some experience with mortgage servicing rules and regulations is an asset. Attorney also may provide legal advice and guidance on strategic initiatives and regulatory change initiatives relating to mortgage product origination and distribution as part of cross-functional project teams. Strong client management skills and the ability to work well efficiently under tight timeframes is critical to success in this position.

 

Required Skills:

  • J.D. degree or equivalent LLB, LLM
  • Bar Admission in at least one state (active/good standing)
  • Minimum 5 years legal/compliance experience in the mortgage industry
  • Direct experience with high net worth custom residential mortgage lending and documentation (sales, underwriting, products and programs, and clients)
  • Familiarity with estate planning trust types, LLCs, LPs and related issues (i.e., title vesting)

Desired:

  • Experience with high net worth residential mortgage servicing
