JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Mainframe Storage Engineer spans systems engineering activities supporting Mainframe (System z) Storage projects with varying degrees of complexity – includes system design, build, development, implementation, maintenance, operations, and client support across infrastructure and software.

 

The successful candidate will have the ability to work under minimal supervision and will be responsible for researching and analyzing information, the drawing conclusions and presenting them back to the team so that they can be implemented.

 

The Mainframe Storage team is a dynamic global team, with people based in the US, UK and Asia that support Mainframe storage systems in the US and the UK. The team are currently engaged on storage projects such as: Data replication, Data Assurance and Snapshotting, Disaster Recovery and related tests to support the build out of new environments.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Spanning multiple systems, providing support for Mainframe (System z) Storage projects and activities with varying degrees of complexity – including: building, development, implementation, maintenance, operations and client support.
  • Working under minimal supervision from more seasoned consultants or managers – includes support of senior personnel and project managers on technical projects
  • Assisting and help train junior analysts – includes guiding and providing technical peer reviews.
  • Working on complex problems where analysis of situation or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors; exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criterion for obtaining results.
  • Participating in 7x24 oncall rotation.

 

 

Required Job Skills:

  • 7-10 years of experience in a large z/OS SMS environment including experience with the majority of the following tools and technologies:
  • Experienced Mainframe Storage administrator with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience experience in a large z/OS SMS environment including experience with the majority of the following tools and technologies:

    Operating System Environments:
    - Z/OS (JES2 and JES3)

    Hardware:
    - Hitachi [Disk] Virtual Storage Platform (VSP). 
    - IBM Tape (Virtualization, Libraries and Media)

    Software:
    - Strong working Knowledge of IBM System Managed Storage (SMS) concepts and other associated IBM components/facilities:
    - DFSMShsm
    - DFSMSdss
    - DFSMSdfp Utilities (IEBGENER, IEBCOPY, etc.)
    - ICKDSF
    - Access method services (AMS)
    - Object Access Method (OAM)
    - ICF (Integrated Catalog Facility) 
    - ISMF
    - TCDB(VOLCAT)
    - SDSF
    - MVS JCL
    - TSO/ISPF
    - IBM Tape tools (including VMA, VEHSTATS)
    - Working knowledge of CA Technologies software products:
    - CA1 Tape Management System
    - CA CopyCAT
    - CA Disk Backup and Restore
  • Strong leadership and communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to provide 24x7 on-call rotation support with weekend and evening work
  • Self-starter and able to work without hands-on supervision

 

Desired Skills

  • Proficient with SAS, VISIO, MS Office, and REXX
  • Project management skills
  • Assembler, CLIST, and REXX knowledge
  • Conceptual understanding of Mainframe Operations

Establishes input/output processes and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility, coordination of subsystems design, and integration of total system. Viewed as a technology subject matter expert; able to provide and communicate complex technology solutions across differing audiences including technical, managerial, business executives, and/or vendors. Will have responsibility for multiple, complex projects; will direct activities of teams related to special initiatives or operations and may have direct reports. Leads the resolution process for complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criterion for obtaining results. Information Technology degree and/or technology certifications preferred or substantial equivalent experience. Typically 7-10 years of IT experience.
