JOB DESCRIPTION:

SUMMARY: Position is responsible for mixing Chemotherapeutic and/or other infused drugs under the supervision of the prescriber, managing inventory as it relates to outpatient oncology infusion products. Implementation, operation, and maintenance of all medication related technology. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: All medication preparation and documentation functions are supervised by the physician or other licensed independent practitioner. Reviews physician orders with the prescriber for completeness; transcribes appropriate information through computer order entry to generate patient medication profile by using pharmaceutical/medical terminology, symbols & abbreviations. Selects & prepares medications & pharmaceutical products by name & dosage listed on physician's order, places medication in proper container w/ correct label, makes required notations & initials physician's order. Reviews physician's orders & patient medical record in order to determine whether allergies, sensitivities and/or interactions have been documented. Alerts nursing personnel and the prescriber when computer indicates that prescribed medication may be contraindicated due to drug allergies, sensitivities or interactions. Prioritizes work flow to meet the operational needs of the pharmacy. Maintains pharmacy inventory in designated areas. Reviews pharmacy inventory for medications to be returned (i.e., expired/outdated products, deteriorated products, illegible labels, etc). Procures, orders, receives, stocks & returns merchandise following established procedures. Prepares pharmacy products by demonstrating a knowledge of quality control. Participates in quality assurance & Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes. Operates & maintains specialized pharmacy equipment by assembling, disassembling, cleaning and maintaining sterility, changing filters, making minor repairs as needed & performing & documenting periodic checks & adjustments. Documents all scheduled maintenance designed to ensure sterility according to protocol. Participates in assigned education, training programs & departmental meetings as required. Keeps assigned work area & equipment in an organized & clean condition & maintains supporting documentation. Maintains a safe, secure & efficient work environment. Answers, makes telephone calls & retrieves voice mail messages consistent w/ assigned duties in accordance w/ telephone access standards. Other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: Prior experience handling and compounding chemotherapy and other hazardous medications. Competency in data analysis, critical thinking skills, and handling hazardous medications is required. An understanding of all federal, state, and local rules and regulations as they pertain to hazardous medications is required SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrates professional, appropriate, and effective communication/presentation skills, include written, verbal and nonverbal. Demonstrates a positive attitude and respectful, professional customer service. Acknowledges patient's rights on confidentiality issues, maintains patient confidentiality at all times, and follows HIPAA guidelines and regulations. Proactively acts as patient advocate, responding with empathy and respect to resolve patient and family concerns. Proactively continues to educate self and improve professional skills. EDUCATION: High School Diploma Required, Associates/Bachelors degree preferred ; Completion of approved Pharmacy Technician program preferred; Currently working at least 40 hours per week.; Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the State Board of Pharmacy. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) status required with documentation of continuing education as defined by the Board of Pharmacy.
