Cortech is seeking a Veterinary Technologist in Sylmar, CA.


Working under limited supervision, assists in various surgical procedures involving research animals to test for biological compatibility and device performance. Collects and reports electrical data for research studies. Provides care to maintain animal health according to the specifications outlined in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), guidelines provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and under the direction of the attending veterinarian. Assists in the completion of animal research studies under the guidelines of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Takes initiative to ensure work is done accurately and completely. Applies existing work methods to different known situations.

Essential Functions:
1. Under limited supervision, perform various research procedures while adhering to the guidelines of the animal Welfare Act (AWA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations, the standards of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
2. Conducts research and testing of implantable cardiac therapeutic devices including pacemakers, defibrillators, and leads.
3. Enters recorded data into databases. Also prepares reports as directed.
4. Monitors animals for any health problems and/or behavior changes. Follows guidelines from the facilities’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), and follows instructions from the attending veterinarian for treatment of animals. Makes observations and advises veterinarian of animal’s conditions. Provides animal healthcare including, but not limited to, peri-operative monitoring, administering medications by various routes, dental care, administering vaccinations, and providing systemic treatment.
5. Uses proper animal restraint techniques to ensure adequate control and safety.
6. Sterilize surgical instruments. Disinfect facility equipment and rooms.
7. Uses knowledge gained from medical education and experience in cardiology, general anatomy and surgical techniques for assisting in surgical procedures.
8. Performs various clerical activities. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining animal health and study files, maintaining various logs, inventory, and purchasing

Required:
--An Associate’s Degree in a related science discipline; Registered Veterinary Technician (R.V.T.) certification.
--Typically a minimum of four or more years of progressively more responsible related work experience in an animal research facility, comparable animal clinic, or shelter. Demonstrated eye-hand coordination, the capability to work with precision research devices, a working knowledge of the kennel, scales, veterinary, and test equipment required, and the ability to work
under general supervision.
--Incumbents are required to work cooperatively and productively with others.
--Incumbents must also be able to meet deadlines on multiple assignments and be able to operate in a diverse cross-functional team environment.
--Must be able to read, write, and converse in technical terminology, and perform a range of mathematical calculations and measurements.
--Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, organizational skills are required.
--The ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English is also required; this requirement includes clear, understandable speech and demonstrated comprehension skills.
--The ability to successfully pass a reading comprehension pre-employment examination is mandatory.
--The demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and Company operating procedures, Processes, policies and rules is essential.
--Demonstrated proficiency in operating a personal computer; the ability to pass a 10-key assessment examination.
--Must possess a functional familiarity in using various PC-based operating systems (e.g. Windows) and software applications, including word processing/spreadsheet software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel), as well as demonstrated data entry experience.
--Must be able to maintain regular and predictable attendance; the ability to work overtime is also required. --Must have the ability to on occasion lift up to approximately 60 pounds.
