Eligibility Police Academy Graduate – Certificate of Completion from a POST Academy within the last three years. Police Academy Attendee – Currently enrolled and in good standing in a POST Academy in California; will be considered a Police Trainee and eligible for benefits ($31.80 per hour, fully paid medical, dental, and vision until completion of the academy). Must be currently employed as a Full‑Time Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff in California for at least one year. Responsibilities Patrol an assigned area by car, motorcycle, or foot to observe, investigate, and report suspicious or hazardous conditions. Apprehend and arrest law violators. Respond to routine and emergency calls for protection of persons and property, and for enforcement of city ordinances and state laws. Investigate crimes, accidents, deaths, and disturbances; gather evidence; interview, question and take statements from complainants, suspects and witnesses; complete case reports. Handle juvenile and delinquency cases and assist in related programs. Direct traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow during emergencies or congestion; stop drivers violating laws and issue citations. Appear in court to present evidence and testimony. Search, guard, transport and assist in the booking and custodial care of prisoners. Serve writs, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents. Assist in special studies, evidence, training, investigations or other administrative assignments as directed. Provide information and direction to the public and assist in community crime‑prevention programs. Speak before business, school, civic and social groups as requested. Qualifications Knowledge of the following: Basic law enforcement theory, principles, and practices. Principles and techniques of traffic control. Basic interviewing methods. Evidence collection, processing, logging and safeguarding. Pertinent federal, state, and local laws and department rules. Self‑defense principles. Safety regulations, including officer safety and safe driving. Modern office procedures and computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases). Automated law enforcement information systems. Public and agency desk procedures for information services. Record keeping and reporting techniques. Customer service and public relations methods. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Geographic features and locations within the area served. Standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system. Abilities to: Observe accurately and remember details. Think and act quickly in emergencies. Judge situations and people accurately. Learn standard operating procedures of police radio and keyboard terminals. Understand and interpret laws and regulations. Prepare clear, concise written reports. Achieve proficiency in self‑defense and firearms use. Follow oral and written instructions. Deal courteously and effectively with the public. Show initiative, alertness, integrity, and reliability. Education/Training High school graduate or equivalent. Must have completed a POST-approved academy at time of appointment. License or Certificate Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License with satisfactory driving record. Criminal Record Officers must not have been convicted of any felony. Misdemeanor convictions may result in disqualification. Age : 21 years at time of appointment. Citizenship Citizen of the United States or permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship at least one year prior to application. Physical Demands & Working Environment Work primarily in the field with some office duties; exposure to inclement weather, fumes, and public contact. Ability to perform duties with normal hearing acuity, vision, and physical strength. Must complete physical, psychological and medical examinations as a condition of hire. Benefits Health and welfare – cafeteria plan with city contribution for health, dental, vision, life insurance, employee assistance program; cash payment option available. Life insurance Retirement – CalPERS: 3% @ 50 formula for classic members or 2.7% @ 57 formula for PEPRA members. Social security – participation in Medicare portion only. Holidays – 14 days per year. Vacation – 11 to 25 days per year depending on length of service. Sick leave – accrue 12 days per year. Deferred compensation plan – city offers a 457 plan. Medical‑after‑retirement account (MARA). Educational incentive plan. Uniform allowance – $960 per year (increases $20 per year). Bilingual pay – $100 per month. Senior officer pay – percentage based on months of service. Shift differential – 2.5% for swing and 5% for graveyard.
