The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity as an Accounting Technician at the Montana State Hospital.
The Montana State Hospital (MSH) in Warm Springs provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults with serious mental illness. MSH is the only public psychiatric hospital in Montana that serves people admitted from communities across the state.
Accounting Technicians are responsible for maintaining an accurate and detailed account of resident funds which are on deposit with the institution under a cashless system. Responsibilities include recording all receipts, deposits, and withdrawals for each individual account, issuing checks on behalf of residents, preparing monthly statements, maintaining cash drawer, entering resident employee payroll, and balancing and maintaining accounting of receipts for the Canteen and Boutique. Additional responsibilities include preparing reports, registering new residents in resident accounting (KEANE) system, organizing tax information, and filing.
This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.50 an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2024.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity
- Knowledge of accounting principles and practices including General Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) and knowledge of state procedures.
- Accurate and efficient data entry and 10-key skills.
- Knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Excellent Excel skills.
- Meet minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of accounting experience.
- Two years of data entry and computer experience.
- Previous banking experience, preferred.
- Typing and data entry skills test will be required.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
