Centralized Intake is the Division of Child Protection Services first contact with customers. Centralized Intake staff make one of the most important determinations in the Comprehensive Safety Intervention Model by determining response to reports of child abuse/neglect and are tasked with taking all reports of abuse/neglect for South Dakota. These calls not only include reports of abuse/neglect, but also calls for support services, calls from outside agencies, and calls for general information. State law requires reports of abuse and neglect to be made orally to Child Protection Services, the county States Attorney, or law enforcement. The county States Attorney and/or law enforcement are then required to inform Child Protection Services about reports they receive. Once a call is received, the Intake Family Services Specialist and the Intake Family Services Lead Workers must make an initial determination regarding next steps for the agency, to include responding to and assessing child abuse and neglect.

This position provides clerical/secretarial support to the Centralized Intake Unit. This position will be responsible for the daily merging and clearance of referrals in the FACIS database, composing and finalizing correspondence, establishing, and maintaining filing systems, creating and maintaining databases, gathering and providing information, and supporting office operations.

The ideal candidate will:

  • communicate effectively and efficiently;
  • successfully plan and organize work activities, adjust to multiple demands, and prioritize tasks to complete assignments and meet schedules and deadlines;
  • demonstrate compassion, respect, courtesy and tact when interacting with others;
  • establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with other employees and the public;
  • understand concepts related to client confidentiality;
  • prepare clear and concise documentation, reports and correspondence that reflect relevant facts.
