Responsibilities*

As a member of the team, the APP will be expected to evaluate and treat neurosurgery patients with faculty available for guidance as well as assist neurosurgeons in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric patients. This includes preoperative teaching, preoperative and postoperative care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Obtain detailed history; perform physical examinations and present pertinent information/data to the medical staff. Perform detailed neurologic examination.
  • Formulate treatment plan, order appropriate radiographic, labs, and/or diagnostic studies.
  • Collect and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests: radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
  • Place referrals to various internal and external services/facilities.
  • Evaluate, screen and counsel patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources.
  • Evaluate postoperative patients and routine follow up visits.
  • Provide routine neurosurgical services effectively and efficiently.
  • Provide consult services for inpatient, outpatient staff as well as community members.
  • Answer patient phone calls and Secure messages in timely manner.
  • Manage myelomeningocele patient population and assist multispecialty physicians in clinic.
  • Provide clinical leadership in practice, staff development, and research.
  • Provide coverage for inpatient neurosurgical service, including morning inpatient rounds with medical faculty, inpatient neurosurgical consults, and/or ED consults, discharging patients.
  • Perform procedures including but not limited to: Programming vagus nerve stimulator, aspiration of subcutaneous reservoir for shunt system or tumor cyst, sampling of cerebrospinal fluid from ventriculostomy, lumbar drain, or externalized shunt, ventriculostomy maintenance and externalized shunt maintenance, removal of ventriculostomies and epidural catheters/lumbar drains, programming adjustable CSF shunts
  • Participate in student, trainee, and staff education.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications*

PA Required Qualifications

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS also required unless PALS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center
  • PALS
  • Clinical practice experience with pediatric neurosurgery patient population

NP Required Qualifications

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS also required unless PALS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center
  • PALS
  • Clinical practice experience with pediatric neurosurgery patient population
NOTE: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.
NOTE: NOTE: In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • One year of pediatric APP experience, preferably in neurology or neurosurgery
  • Recent pediatric neurosurgery clinical practice experience within the last 12 months
  • Experience with pediatric patient care
  • Experience in evaluation and care of preoperative and postoperative neurosurgical patients
  • Clear written and expressed communication demonstrated through resume, evaluations, references
  • Professional development experiences through QI work, etc.
  • Excellent patient service with demonstrated ability to connect with patients and families
  • Ability to easily transition between inpatient to outpatient setting
  • Demonstrated success in managing robust patient volumes (e.g. 10 -12 clinic patients per day) and managing multiple priorities
  • Ability to adhere to documentation completion timeliness
  • Strong team cohesion and interprofessional skills demonstrated with a connection to the goals of service line
  • Ability to evaluate and care for preoperative and postoperative pediatric neurosurgical patients
  • Excellent interpersonal skills while working with parents/caregivers with new neurosurgical diagnosis/stressful situations
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team on the Neurosurgical Service and with other Neurosurgical advanced practice providers
  • Flexibility in work schedule necessary
