AI/Machine Learning Engineer We’re seeking a seasoned AI governance professional to lead enterprise-level oversight of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced analytics across our organization. You’ll ensure AI-enabled systems — spanning regulatory, scientific, enforcement, and administrative functions — operate lawfully, ethically, transparently, and in alignment with public-sector values and environmental justice principles. As our expert on AI risk, you’ll advise senior leadership and work closely with legal, cybersecurity, data, procurement, and program teams to drive responsible innovation while protecting public trust. Responsibilities Designing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive enterprise AI risk management and governance framework, including policies, standards, and approval processes for AI and analytics use cases. Leading or co‑chairing an internal AI Governance Council that reviews, prioritizes, and approves AI initiatives, with consistent lifecycle oversight from concept and procurement through deployment and retirement. Identifying, assessing, monitoring, and mitigating AI‑related risks including algorithmic bias, model drift, explainability gaps, data quality issues, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, legal exposure, and reputational harm. Overseeing AI risk assessments, model impact assessments, and control testing, and establishing escalation, incident response, and remediation protocols for AI‑related issues. Partnering with Legal, Privacy, Records Management, and Compliance teams to ensure AI systems comply with state and federal laws, public records requirements, privacy protections, and civil rights obligations. Monitoring emerging AI laws, regulations, and standards and advising executive leadership on AI governance risk and regulatory readiness. Championing ethical AI principles including fairness, accountability, transparency, human oversight, and explainability. Ensuring AI use does not result in unfair or opaque outcomes in regulatory functions such as permitting, inspections, and enforcement, and supporting mechanisms for public transparency and defensibility where AI contributes to decisions. Collaborating with the IRM, Deputy Director of Information Resources, CDO, CISO, and program Directors to embed AI risk considerations into enterprise technology and data strategy and investment decisions. Acting as a trusted executive partner, balancing innovation enablement with responsible risk management. Preferred Qualifications Developing and delivering executive and workforce training on responsible AI use and risk awareness. Promoting a culture of ethical, risk‑aware innovation across scientific, regulatory, and administrative teams. Providing guidance to program teams on acceptable and prohibited uses of AI technologies. Job Information Long‑term contract opportunity onsite in Austin, TX. No sponsorship can be provided.
