Job Description and Duties

The Compression-Ignition and Heavy-Duty (CIHD) Certification Section is responsible for reviewing manufacturers’ applications for certification for off-road diesel engines and on-road heavy-duty diesel and gasoline engines, and vehicles to determine compliance with current regulations and test procedures.
Test plans, data, and related technical information are reviewed to determine if new engines and vehicles comply with state emission control regulations for diesel and gasoline engines and vehicles.
Upon a determination of compliance, Executive Orders approving the sale of these engines and vehicles are prepared for signature by the Division Chief.
The section also assists CARB’s regulatory and enforcement staff by providing certification data, information, and expertise for reviewing draft proposed regulation and for case development of violations.
Compliance with assistance is provided to manufacturers to aid in the correct implementation of CARB’s regulations.
Finally, the section maintains an accurate and up-to-date database of certification and production audit data and information.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework.
The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy.
While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

The positions at CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need.
