ABOUT THIS POSITION In 2025, more than 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), making it one of the busiest airports in the United States and a key hub in the nation's fifth-largest city. PHX is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System, which also includes Deer Valley and Goodyear airports, operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department (AVN). Together, these airports generate an annual economic impact of over $44 billion. The Aviation Department has vacancies for an Airport Operations Assistant position. This position will perform a variety of safety, security, and customer service tasks in airside and landside operations at the airport. Typical duties include extensive face-to-face public contact, handling inquiries, and complaints from airport users. Performing traffic, pedestrian, and crowd control functions. Responding to and aiding during aircraft and other emergencies. Conducting airport operational, safety, and security inspections as prescribed by federal regulations. Taking appropriate actions to ensure compliance with airport and federal rules and regulations, as well as Phoenix City Code. All Airport Operations Assistants are required to drive on City business. Applicants must have an acceptable driving record to be considered for employment. Currently, there are several regular full-time vacancies in the Landside and Airside Operations sections. IDEAL CANDIDATE Knowledge and experience of Part 139 Airfield and Part 1542 Security regulations and procedures is a plus. SALARY Pay Range: $22.52 to $36.68 per hour. Hiring Range: $22.52 to $33.27 per hour. Pay Range Explanation: Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification. Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity. Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 344. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance. Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase. Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease. Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade. When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Working conditions: You may be required to work irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings. This position requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust. This position also requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. The following list is not all inclusive but are TSA general factors for disqualification of employment for working at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Experience with emergency response. Experience with observation and inspections. Experience with rule enforcement and compliance. Experience providing excellent customer service. Experience working with and assisting customers in varying stressful situations. Experience resolving customer issues and providing information to the public in a friendly manner. Airport Certified Employee AAAE in Airport Operations or Airport Security or Airport Communications is a plus. Classes completed towards a bachelor's degree in aviation such as Aviation Management, Safety Science, Global Security and Intelligence Studies or any other Aviation related field is a plus.
