Turner Scientific conducts non-human contract research related to hearing and balance disorders. Our sponsors are biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies that hire us to evaluate their drugs, devices, and cochlear implants for the potential to improve or protect hearing prior to those therapies entering human use. We continue to grow, and need to add another member to the animal care team.

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Animal Care Technician will perform essential husbandry and care tasks to support the successful completion of research studies. Regular cage cleaning, animal health checks, animal handling, room sanitation, and careful documentation will be completed in a humane and regulatory compliant manner while maintaining scientific integrity of all projects. The Animal Care Technician will also contribute to maintenance of our guinea pig and mouse breeding programs. Specific responsibilities of this role are provided below.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Work under general supervision of the Vivarium Supervisor but will also work with the Veterinarian and Animal Program Director, to perform standard daily animal care to contribute to the timely completion and success of sponsored research projects.

Perform husbandry in animal vivarium rooms, which includes animal handling.

Clean and maintain the vivarium, laboratory rooms, and swine facility.

Perform health checks on laboratory animals and communicate findings with the Vet Staff.

Assist with management and record keeping.

Maintain accurate and timely records of all work performed.

Apply standard operating procedures to assure accuracy of all work.

Maintain food & bedding, PPE, and enrichment inventory.

Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance of specialized equipment in the animal room.

Observe basic animal abnormalities related to sickness or illness

Lift up to 50 lbs.

Perform tasks with others in a positive attitude

Show initiative when preforming multiple tasks

Basic Qualifications

Education: high school degree required; bachelors or associates degree appreciated in any area of study

Highly motivated and willing to learn new things

Caring nature with desire to optimize animal health

Strong communication ability and customer interaction skills

Skill in prioritizing obligations and deadlines

Attention to detail

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

Details About the Position

Job Type: Full-time, hourly position

Pay: commensurate with experience, with opportunities for rapid growth

Benefits:

Schedule:

o Monday to Friday 8:30 am 4:30 pm with half-hour lunch; occasional early morning, night, and weekend work is possible
