• Participates in sampling programs designed to inform the effectiveness of specific stream restoration actions in the Chehalis River Basin for improving water quality and aquatic and semi-aquatic species habitat.
• Conducts fish, wildlife, and habitat monitoring and research under supervision of a higher-level professional.
• Uses established procedures to characterize streams and stream habitats.
• Monitors water quality, including stream temperature and flow.
• Conducts biological surveys for fish, amphibians, beaver, and aquatic macroinvertebrates.
• Operates trucks and drives on logging roads on private forestlands.

• Deploys, maintains and downloads dataloggers.
• Enters data on handheld iPads.
• Records tabular data on datasheets.
• Records field conditions and notes.

• Ensures data quality.
• Downloads data into existing databases.

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Primarily field work but does involve a minimal amount of field preparation in the office. 90-95% of the time will be spent in the field or preparing to go in the field.
  • While in the field, hiking off-trail through vegetation that may be extremely dense and up and down steep slopes will be required. Employees will at times be required to carry a heavy pack (< 40 pounds) and haul awkward equipment (e.g. rebar). Field work requires bending, ducking, balancing, and crawling through, under, and over dense understory and woody debris. Work both independently and in small teams of 2 or 3. Employees must be comfortable navigating and hiking throughout managed landscapes on foot in some study sites that have been recently harvested, and over downed trees and wood or up streams that may be slippery. Employee must be capable and comfortable navigating off trail over steep, uneven, and slippery terrain. Employees must be comfortable navigating and driving on logging roads located on Private forestlands throughout western Washington.
• Schedule:
  • Four (4) 10-hr days, Monday Thursday. Because this position is one member of a field team, there is no flexibility in workdays or hours.
• Travel Requirements:
  • Daily trips to field sites located within daily driving distance of the Natural Resources Building (NRB) in Olympia.
  • Camping overnight near study sites may be required on occasion.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Employee must be able and willing to drive vehicles (4WD trucks and SUVs) on logging roads located on Private forestlands in western Washington. Wear rubber boots, sometimes caulked boots, a hard hat and high visibility vest, and raingear and/or waders and wading shoes.
  • Use an iPad or other device to enter data collected in the field. Upload data from monitors and sensors and upload data into databases. Haul and lift heavy equipment up to 40 pounds. Perform basic functions using standard software (e.g., Microsoft).
• Customer Interactions:
  • May be approached by landowners or other users of public and/or private lands when in or on route to study sites. Responsible for maintaining positive and productive working relationships with landowners on whose lands study sites are located as well as other users of those lands. Interact with said individuals in a respectful manner and provide proof of access permits if requested.

• Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1 or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

• Ability to collect data according to established protocols and make independent judgments in the field in the absence of the Supervisor or other lead staff.
• Knowledge of principles and procedures of biological research; standard laboratory and field methods; fish, wildlife, and stream ecology.
• Use standard laboratory and field equipment; perform a variety of outdoor work in inclement weather.
• Experience with Microsoft software including Word, Excel, and Access.

• College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute year for year for experience, provided the course work includes at least 6 semester or 9 quarter hours of natural science classes.

• Valid drivers license.

• One (1) year of professional experience conducting field research, familiarity with water quality and physical monitoring.
