Architectural Designer - Job Captain

The Family Health Centers of San Diego is one of the largest federally qualified health centers in the country, serving more than 227,000 patients annually, 91% of whom are low‑income and 29% uninsured. The organization provides comprehensive medical, behavioral health, dental, vision and specialty care across 90 sites in San Diego County. Role Overview The Architectural Designer will manage all phases of design projects—programming, schematic design, construction documentation and construction administration—working closely with the Project Manager, Architects, engineers and consultants. Responsibilities Develop and refine project construction documents from schematic design to construction administration. Maintain QA/QC of technical documentation processes throughout the project lifecycle. Provide oversight to delegated tasks and collaborate with the project team. Respond to design team member queries and consultant questions related to drawing coordination, organization and detailing. Lead office training sessions to enhance the skills of other team members. Participate in on‑site meetings, review submittals, respond to RFIs and conduct punch walks. Prepare design presentations and renderings as needed. Coordinate with outside architecture firms, structural, MEP and civil engineers. Research and evaluate materials, products and manufacturer details regarding installation and warranty. Identify and assess jurisdictional requirements, codes and submittal/plan check processes. Prepare necessary applications, documentation and plans for permitting. Research unfamiliar code sections and construction details independently when required. Ensure quality and timely completion of design projects through proactive planning and communication with the project team. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design (preferred). 5–7 years of drafting experience at an Architecture or Engineering firm. Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit. Strong design and graphic skills. Knowledge of architectural concepts, practices, detailing and commonly used standards. Understanding of building codes, OSHPD and other healthcare-related design requirements, including materials, methods and graphic standards. Demonstrated experience with the permitting process. Ability to travel between sites and locations as an essential job function. Valid California driver’s license, reliable car, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance. Acceptable driving record and compliance with California law regarding driver’s license and insurance. Benefits Regular full‑time, onsite position. Competitive salary: $70,304.00–$88,751.00.
