Position Overview
We are seeking a visionary Architecture Higher Education Leader to lead and grow a well-established architectural practice in the Mid-Atlantic region. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a licensed architect with deep expertise in higher education design, business development, and team leadership.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record managing large-scale architectural projects ranging from $10M–$50M, while building strong client relationships, mentoring high-performing teams, and shaping the strategic growth of an architecture studio.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Business Development
- Lead regional growth initiatives within the higher education market
- Identify, pursue, and win new architectural projects
- Strengthen long-term client relationships and industry partnerships
- Collaborate with senior leadership to expand market presence across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions
- Represent the firm with community stakeholders, campus leaders, and industry organizations
Project & Design Leadership
- Oversee higher education projects valued between $10M–$50M from concept through completion
- Ensure design excellence, technical accuracy, and regulatory compliance
- Guide architectural design, graphic modeling, and technical documentation efforts
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions
- Maintain project schedules, budgets, and quality standards
Team Development & Studio Growth
- Lead, mentor, and develop architectural teams (5–15 professionals)
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance studio culture
- Recruit and retain top architectural talent
- Align team strengths with strategic business goals
- Promote continuous improvement and professional development
Requirements
Required Qualifications (Must Have)
- Active Architectural License (NCARB preferred)
- 18+ years of experience in higher education architectural design and leadership
- Professional Architecture Licenses beyond Maryland (Mid-Atlantic / Southeast regions)
- LEED AP Accreditation
- SCUP Membership
- Proven success in business development and client relationship growth
- Experience managing large-scale projects ($10M–$50M) from concept to completion
- Strong leadership, communication, and mentorship abilities
- Proficiency in architectural design and graphic modeling tools:
- Revit
- SketchUp
- Adobe Suite
Preferred Experience
- Background in large enterprise architecture or civil engineering firms (500+ employees or equivalent scale)
- Demonstrated career stability with progressive leadership responsibility
- Experience working closely with higher education institutions and campus planning teams
- Strong understanding of sustainable design and higher education facilities planning
Work Environment
This is a hybrid role based in Hunt Valley, Maryland, requiring on-site presence at least three days per week. The role is primarily office-based with occasional site visits. A professional, collaborative work environment is provided, and reasonable accommodations may be made as needed.
