Calvin University is currently seeking a diverse pool of candidates who possess a strong commitment to Christian faith and diversity/inclusion, experience in higher education, a master's degree in student affairs, and who are interested in serving as Area Coordinators in Residence Life. Calvin is an excellent place to grow spiritually and professionally, a small community located in a vibrant diverse city.

Area Coordinators at Calvin are key members of the Student Life Division, working the front lines of student development. From Christian discipleship and leadership development to student discipline, from developmental programming for all areas of life to mentoring of student employees, this position entails a broad scope of responsibilities. The position is a 10-month, full-time, live-in position.

More specifically, Area Coordinators

  1. Demonstrate an active and integrated Christian commitment, support for the Christian Reformed mission and vision of the institution, a commitment to professional development, and a collaborative spirit with colleagues from within the Student Life Division and beyond.
  2. Serve as live-in staff member of a co-ed residence hall of 220-350 students (one wing of men, one wing of women), managing and administering all aspects of the life in the building, including front desk operations, housing details, and monitoring of maintenance issues.
  3. Serve on on-call rotation approximately 8 hours per week (8am to 5pm on one workday per week). Calvin employs three on-call social workers who cover evening, overnight, weekend, and break on-call emergencies.
  4. Supervise and mentor 6-12 Resident Assistants and 25-35 additional student leaders, providing challenge and support to them in the areas of their job responsibilities, leadership skills, and spiritual and personal growth. Provide overall leadership, development and supervision for residence hall student leaders by recruiting, selecting, training and supervising; mentoring RA staff by conducting individual and group meetings; and providing ongoing training and leadership development opportunities to support spiritual and personal growth and ensure community development of the residence halls.
  5. In collaboration with other colleagues, train resident assistants to promote inclusive multicultural communities in the Residence Halls. Support underrepresented students, facilitate inclusive multicultural communities, and promote Residence Hall and campus-wide inclusion efforts.
  6. Facilitate educational programming for residence hall students by creating, planning and implementing co-curricular learning through programs, events, individual contact, and conversations with students, thus facilitating student development outside of the classroom.
  7. Oversee student discipline by using intervention techniques, reporting incidents conducting disciplinary hearings, promoting student accountability for actions, and maintaining administrative records to facilitate student development and maintain an orderly life on campus.
  8. Establish and maintain effective student relations by cooperating with student retention projects with the registrar, maintaining contact with parents, monitoring health concerns, facilitating roommate negotiations, and offering informal counseling to students to contribute to students success and growth.
  9. Demonstrate an active and integrated Christian commitment, support for the Reformed mission and vision of the institution, a commitment to professional development, and a collaborative spirit with colleagues from within the Student Life Division and beyond.

This particular open positions is in a hall which houses three Living-Learning communities: one focused on racial reconciliation, an honors community of scholars, and an outdoor recreation/creation care floor. You may learn more about those communities here:


The position is a 10-month (renewable each year), full-time, live-in position beginning July 29 and ending May 29 of the following year. The starting salary range for a Resident Director is between $33,000-$34,840; plus 15 meals/week at dining hall during academic session, two bedroom apartment, utilities, and health insurance and assistance with moving expenses. In addition to an apartment, each Area Coordinator has a separate, private office in the hall. You may remain in your apartment over summer break.
Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelors degree (B.A) from a four-year college or university; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A masters degree in student personnel, counseling, or education is preferred.
