Role Overview

The Assistant Director of Health Care plays a key leadership role in the delivery of medical care and diabetes management at camp. This individual supports the daily operations of the Health Center, supervises and mentors health staff, and ensures diabetes care protocols are followed consistently across camp.


This role serves as a liaison between the healthcare team, counselors, campers, and families, helping ensure both clinical excellence and a supportive, camper-centered experience.


Key Responsibilities


Health Center Operations

  • Support daily management of the Health Center and ensure it operates efficiently and safely
  • Coordinate schedules for health staff (RNs, medical assistants, volunteers)
  • Maintain and oversee medical records, medication logs, and incident reports
  • Assist with supply inventory, organization, and ordering as needed


Diabetes Management

  • Support diabetes management for campers and staff, including insulin dosing, pump site changes, CGM troubleshooting, and treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
  • Help develop and implement individualized care plans
  • Monitor trends in BG/CGM data and communicate concerns to senior medical staff
  • Provide direct care and clinical guidance to campers and staff as needed


Leadership & Supervision

  • Assist with training, supervision, and mentorship of health staff and volunteers
  • Provide diabetes education and support to counselors and camp staff
  • Model best practices in diabetes care and camper interaction


Camper & Family Support

  • Serve as a health advocate for campers, ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met
  • Communicate with parents and caregivers as needed before, during, and after camp
  • Participate in camper check-in and check-out processes, including reviewing medical forms and medications


Emergency Preparedness

  • Assist with managing medical emergencies and coordinating care with outside medical services if needed
  • Ensure emergency protocols are understood and followed by staff


Qualifications


Required

  • Active RN license in the state of Massachusetts
  • Minimum 2+ years working as a nurse, leadership experience preferred
  • Familiarity with Type 1 diabetes management (pumps, CGMs, insulin types, carbohydrate counting)
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment


Preferred

  • Experience in a camp or pediatric setting
  • Personal or professional experience with Type 1 diabetes


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Live on-site during camp sessions (room and board provided)
  • Ability to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends during camp
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and assist campers physically as needed
