Assistant Director of Sport Programs, Intramurals

Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of Sport Programs, Intramurals serves as a valued member of the Recreational Services team, working primarily to advance Intramural Sport opportunities for the University of Iowa campus. The Intramural Sports program consists of 35 unique activities offered over 60 times each year, averaging over 5,000 unique participants and 32,000 individual participations annually.

Responsibilities will include program development and implementation, special event programming, calendar development, sport scheduling, and revenue generation. The Assistant Director is responsible for budget development and management, policy creation and enforcement, participant conduct oversight, and the development and delivery of participant education trainings. The Assistant Director is responsible for daily administration, supervision, and management of the Intramural Sports Program, with an emphasis on student staff development and interpersonal growth for program participants.

The Assistant Director is responsible for recruitment, selection, direct supervision, and evaluation of the full-time Sport Programs Coordinator and serves as the primary backup for the coordinator. The Assistant Director also oversees the recruitment, selection, and supervision of 12 student Sport Program Supervisors and up to 70 student Intramural Officials.

Education:

Masters degree in Recreation or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional experience (typically a minimum of 2) in college or university recreation program. Two-year Graduate Assistantship is equivalent to one-year professional experience.
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including a demonstrated commitment to creating a welcoming and respectful environment.
  • Working experience (typically 1 3 years) supervising hourly sport programs leadership staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Work requires a willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency in utilizing standard office computer software applications.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR, AED and First-Aid Instructor Certification (or be able obtain within six months of hire).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working on NIRSA National Championship Series Committees.
  • Officiating experience (typically 1 or more years) outside of a collegiate Intramural Sports program (extramural, high school, college level officiating).
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills such as teaching, developing, and delivering presentations, writing reports, proposals, professional correspondence, and staff manuals.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of assessment methods and activities; ability to assess research and review students' learning outcomes to ensure achievement of objectives and strategies.
  • Budget development and management experience.
  • Experience with intramural sports scheduling software (e.g. IMLeagues).
  • Experience planning and delivering Unified Sport programs

This position requires most of the work to be performed in-person, on-site, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an off-site location with an approved hybrid work arrangement.
