Founded in 2020, MPCL is a growing Library focused on innovation and community service. MPCL moved to the newly redeveloped Park Central in the heart of Manassas Park in Summer 2022 and is conveniently co-located within City Hall. Manassas Park City Library seeks a full-time Assistant Library Director to work closely with the Library Director in overseeing the operations of the Library. The Assistant Library Director will have direct oversight of the Circulation team and ensure that exceptional customer service is provided to all patrons. This is an ideal position and opportunity for someone with previous success in a supervisory position or an experienced librarian in the public library space. The Assistant Library Director will be a key player in the development of the library’s newest strategic plan.
This position is under the supervision of the Library Director and is responsible for supervising staff.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Manage the Circulation team to include hiring, training, scheduling, assigning tasks, motivating, evaluating, and staff development
- Supervise and provide leadership for day-to-day operations of the library
- Communicates with City officials and departments as needed
- Maintain Library account receivables and expenses; this includes payment of invoices, credit card coding, check requests, money handling, and collection acquisitions
- Oversee collection maintenance and materials processing, to include weeding, processing new and donated materials, and evaluating the collection
- Assist and provide administrative services such as attending meetings, coordinating trainings, manual creation, and assisting the Library Director with procedure and policy review and evaluation
- Provide effective communication on procedures and processes to staff and public in person, online, and over the phone
- Facilitate, maintain, and update the Library’s website and social media accounts
- Respond to and resolve patron issues, including account questions and policy enforcement
- Maintain an attractive, organized, and well-used library, including creating displays, shelving order, programming assistance, supplies inventory, and providing feedback to the Director on the needs of the community and library
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
- Assists the Library Director with preparing correspondence and reports such as monthly library statistics, annual report, and annual state library report
- Facilitate the Library’s volunteer program
- Assist the Library Director in identifying, writing, and implementing grants
- Act as the Person In-Charge (PIC) in the absence of the Library Director
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.
- ALA-Accredited MLS or MLIS degree required
- Minimum of five (5) years of public library experience preferred
- At least three (3) years of successful public library management/supervisory experience preferred
- Ability to speak multiple languages strongly preferred
- Experience tracking usage statistics, data collection, and report preparation
- Accommodate a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends
- Knowledge of online library databases and services
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent communication skills– both verbal and written
- Excellent technical skills, including a familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Suite, and knowledge of various technologies
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.

- Salary Range: $62,000-$67,000 annually
