Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is essential to Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. There are over 400 sailings each day on 10 ferry routes. WSF transports nearly 17 million passengers a year and has more than 1,800 employees. Employees perform a variety of duties on vessels, in terminals, at the maintenance facility, and at the Seattle headquarters.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Assistant Office Engineer to perform skilled technical tasks in support of WSFs construction engineering projects. This position requires you to act independently and use sound judgment to accomplish work assignments. These assignments include originating, analyzing, tracking, and processing construction documentation and associated data. The position requires establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal staff and management, and external organizations and agencies. Completed work performed by this position supports WSDOTs mission in providing safe and reliable transportation to the communities WSF serves.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Assistant Office Engineer will:

  • Prepare and review Contractor payments for construction contracts.
  • Prepare final estimate package, and coordinate with WSDOT HQ and other local agencies.
  • Track contract time/working days; create weekly statements of working days.
  • Prepare documentation for change orders, and process change orders.
  • Track, review, report, and interface with internal staff and management, external agencies, and contractors.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience performing technical/engineering work as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent experience.
OR
  • Associate degree in engineering, construction, business administration, or related field.
And
  • Skills to communicate effectively using a variety of methods including diverse groups.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret written material such as policies, manuals, and contracts.
  • Ability to use a personal computer.
  • Ability to use or learn to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Unifier, Bluebeam/Adobe PDF applications, and Washington State-specific applications.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Three (3) years of experience performing technical/engineering work as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or equivalent.
  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering, business administration, or a related field.
  • Experience and proficiency in data input and output with mainframe and/or database systems and software.
