Job Description
Piedmont Virginia Community College seeks an innovative and collaborative individual to join the administrative faculty as an Associate Dean of Nursing Programs. This full-time, 12-month administrative faculty position reports to the Dean of Health and Life Sciences. The Associate Dean works to ensure operational effectiveness by providing day-to-day support services to nursing teaching faculty and related campus staff. The Associate Dean assists the Dean in advancing the nursing programs and divisions goals and objectives.
The Associate Dean provides operational oversight and day-to-day management of the associate degree nursing program (RN) and the licensed practical nursing program (PN), including class schedule development, facility management, the efficient and effective use of learning spaces, teaching modalities, faculty hiring and assignments, and teaching and laboratory workloads. The Associate Dean also assists with establishing and building relationships with employers, community agencies, educational institutions, program accrediting bodies, municipalities, and governmental organizations to foster job placements to enhance program accreditation standing and transfer opportunities.
The Associate Dean assists nursing students with academic issues, actions, and problems related to their enrollment, progress, and completion of their academic goals, assists nursing teaching faculty in resolving student, campus, and academic issues, assists the dean with course schedule planning, faculty/staff hiring, supervision, development and evaluation including managing the recruitment and selection of teaching faculty (full-time and adjunct) and staff in accordance with the colleges procedures and coordinating search committees to recommend candidates for hire.
The Associate Dean assists the Dean with curriculum development in the nursing areas, as well as budget development and fiscal monitoring, and assists with academic standards and
assessment to ensure consistent delivery of quality instruction. The Associate Dean serves on college-wide committees, works with other deans and administrators in a team environment, and creates and maintains an open, collaborative, and inclusive college environment focused on student learning and success. The Associate Dean also serves as a resource to the Workforce Services division Nurse aide program. Approximate Salary range for 12-month administrative faculty: $75,000-$95,000 depending on education and experience.
Specific Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring that nursing programs comply with the requirements of the Virginia Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing
  • Coordinating the preparation of licensing and accreditation visits and reports
  • Overseeing the admission, retention, and recruitment of nursing students
  • Developing partnerships with other institutions and external agencies
  • Evaluating facilities for clinical placement of students
  • Recommending an annual budget for the nursing programs
  • Providing the leadership in the coordination of student completion ceremonies
  • Establishing and maintaining the nursing program curriculum advisory committees
  • Teaching a minimum of three (3) semester hours in the fall and spring semesters


Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Masters degree in nursing from an accredited institution, or masters degree from an accredited institution which includes course work in nursing, education, or administration
  • Possession of a valid, active, and currently unencumbered Virginia Registered Nursing License
  • At least one year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct care
  • Sensitivity to, and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
  • Proven ability to work as a team leader, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude and sense of humor
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication
  • Familiarity with regional accreditation standards as well as specialized accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the comprehensive mission of community colleges

Additional Considerations
  • Doctorate from an accredited institution nursing or a related field
  • Community college teaching experience in a community college nursing program
  • Leadership of faculty and staff in a higher education setting
  • Teaching, administrative, program management, and/or curriculum development experience
  • Familiarity with the use of instructional technology to enhance teaching and learning
  • Experience with active learning, team-based learning and/or other student-centered teaching style
  • Experience with development and/or implementation of concept-based curriculum in a Nursing program
  • Experience developing online courses in a college setting
