Associate Program Director, Field Placement

Overview Established in 1865, George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the nation's capital and one of the most prestigious in the country. The Associate Program Director, Field Placement reports to the Assistant Dean, Field Placement and leads the organization’s field placement administration, assessment, and program improvement. The role ensures compliance with American Bar Association standards and the Law School’s internal requirements, providing a resource for faculty, students, staff, and field supervisors on externship policy and academic issues. Responsibilities Manage compliance with ABA standards governing externships and experiential education; monitor placements and supervision. Exercise professional judgment in reviewing placements and supervisory practices. Meet with students, faculty and field supervisors to resolve concerns and promote effective supervision and learning outcomes. Provide academic advising on externships and corequisite courses. Support implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Field Placement curriculum. Collaborate with faculty to promote effective pedagogical practices and curricular integration. Develop and deliver training resources for field supervisors and faculty. Collect and analyze program data to support assessment of outcomes and accreditation compliance. Cooperate with administrative offices to maintain accurate registration and enrollment data. Partner with the Career Development Office to link placement experiences to professional development goals. Develop and expand placement opportunities with governmental, judicial and non‑profit employers. Represent the Program at internal and external stakeholders, contributing to the Program’s visibility and reputation. Serve as liaison to professional and educational organizations such as the Association of American Law Schools, CLEA, D.C. Bar, and other relevant bodies. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher plus 3 years of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date. Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience are acceptable. Preferred Qualifications Juris Doctor from an ASA‑accredited law school. Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Demonstrated legal practice experience. Strong written, oral, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills. Ability to exercise independent professional judgment in advising students and addressing programmatic issues. Experience working with students, faculty, supervisors, administrators and external stakeholders. Teaching experience as adjunct or full‑time faculty at an accredited law school. Experience with experiential legal education, externship programs, clinical education, clerkships or attorney supervision. Familiarity with ABA Standards governing experiential education and law school accreditation. Experience advising law students or mentoring early‑career attorneys. Experience developing educational programs, training materials, or assessment initiatives.
