The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities:
This position is stewarded by The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD). A successful candidate for this role will work across multiple directorates and projects within PNNL.

We are seeking an experienced Automation Applications Engineer to join PNNL in executing our ambitious future-looking strategy for the design of engineered automated laboratory platforms and solutions. These systems will perform high throughput and real-time controlled experiments in biology, chemistry, microbial phenotyping and beyond as part of PNNLs strategic plan to increase the capacity and pace of science for our sponsors.

  • Collaborate with research staff to identify opportunities to improve process throughput and robustness with automation in a broad range of scientific applications (e.g. synthetic biology or chemistry, materials synthesis, soil analysis, omics)
  • Translate benchtop/manual processes to automated laboratory equipment and integrated platforms
  • Responsible for implementing and troubleshooting automated applications on laboratory platforms
  • Collaborate with vendors and engineering staff to implement custom automation solutions
  • Analyze system performance data and alarms and work with end users to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Develop and perform system acceptance testing and process qualification
  • Collaborate with computing teams to deploy lab automation processes that integrate with our laboratory information management system (LIMS)
  • Stay current with new technologies and evaluate them for use in new or existing systems
  • Communicate and collaborate with staff across multiple disciplines and backgrounds to ensure successful technology integrations
  • Use multidisciplinary understanding to solve engineering problems
  • Provide input on scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or task level
  • Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff and students
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in using or developing scripts on complex laboratory equipment like liquid handlers (e.g. Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter)
  • Knowledge of biological and/or chemistry applications (e.g. synthetic biology, omics, synthetic chemistry)
  • Degree or course work in biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or chemical engineering
  • Knowledge of experimental design and basic statistical analysis (e.g. t-tests, chi-square)
  • Experience troubleshooting laboratory equipment and/or scientific processes
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment:
Laboratory work that may involve use of corrosive, hazardous, and toxic chemicals.
