JOB DESCRIPTION:

391356BR

Bioinformatician / Data Scientist, Sickle cell disease

USA

About the role

Internal Title: Expert II, Data Science

Location: onsite in Cambridge, MA

About this role:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common monogenic genetic disorder with ~300,000 babies born with the defect globally each year. It is an early onset debilitating multi-organ disease and leads to ~175,000 death per year, 70% of which occurs in Africa. In US, there are ~100,000 SCD patients and 1/13 African Americans carries one copy of the mutant SCD allele. The current standard of care is managing disease progression starting as early as infant. Gene therapy demonstrated its potential as one-time curative treatment in early clinical trials. Our goal is to make this paradigm-changing therapy accessible and affordable to all SCD patients.

The Discovery Sciences department in Novartis Biomedical Research is looking for a highly motivated NGS sequencing data analyst to join our quest.

This unique and prestigious position is sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with current funding through December 2027.

You will work as part of a highly matrixed team consisting of hematologists, molecular and cell biologists, genome editing/engineering experts, sequencing technologies experts, data scientists, and other biomedical researchers.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • In-depth custom analysis of next-generation (Illumina, PacBio, etc.) sequencing data from targeted experiments.
Method development for quantification of gene editing outcomes (knock-ins, indels, etc.) in bulk cell populations.
  • Identification and profiling of potential off-target effects at genome and transcriptome level.
  • Interpretation of sequencing analysis in the broader project context and clear communication of results and experimental implications to the project team.
  • Close collaboration with project team partners in the design of sequencing experiments for characterization of genome editing outcomes.
  • Standardization and automation of analysis workflows, including development, maintenance, and clear documentation of analysis code base.
