Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Lab Assistant position for Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University (OSU).
We are looking for students to help in a fast-paced plant disease diagnostic laboratory where we help growers solve plant health problems. The OSU Plant Clinic needs highly self-motivated and detail-oriented students who can work independently while working as part of a team. Tasks will include culturing fungi and bacteria from plant tissue, purifying bacteria for identification, making nutrient media, washing labware, autoclaving materials, and other essential lab duties. Greenhouse duties are also assigned occasionally, often for fertilizing, transplanting, and weeding the Clinics research plants.

Hours are typically 10-15 per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during summer breaks. Students must be available to work during all breaks.
Position Duties
60% Processing, plating, and streaking samples
20% Washing labware
15% - Making media
5% - Assisting with miscellaneous greenhouse tasks and others as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
- International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered full-time by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Most work is performed in a typical wet lab. It involves standing for prolonged periods; handling chemicals used in nutrient media, including some antibiotics and fungicides; sitting in front of a sterile hood while carrying out procedures; bending over to wash glassware in a sink; operating small equipment, including balances and an autoclave; occasionally carrying weights up to 20 pounds; may involve working in a greenhouse that is located mile away.
