Connecticut Small Business Development Center
School of Business

The Connecticut Small Business Development Center (CTSBDC) is seeking a Business Advisor to assist small businesses engaged in agriculture and food production in Connecticut. This position will provide one-to-one and group advising and training focused on supply chain resilience, market access, and value-added development. This will include advising applicants in preparation for grants and business strategy pre- and post-award for federally funded programs. This assistance will focus on helping historically underserved producers and small farm/food system businesses to take advantage of new opportunities created through a federal program administered by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, including developing value-added products and services in addition to their primary crop production.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Business advising and grant writing assistance prior to application submission and ongoing support through implementation over the lifetime of their project.
  • Advising in business and product strategy, access to financing, financial management, accessing markets and customers, and other areas as needed.
  • Acting as the intake point for farmer inquiries and providing more in-depth assistance to those who are more specifically looking for assistance on the market side of their business.
  • Assisting clients in strategies to diversify their products and market outlets.
  • Assisting in the facilitation of collaboration between stakeholders.

This position will report to the CTSBDC State Director or Associate Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in business, finance, administration, marketing, management, or food production-related studies, counseling, or another related field.
  • Minimum of three years of business experience, preferably working with small diverse businesses.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience planning, organizing, and executing events.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with culturally sensitive populations engaged in farming and food producing businesses strongly preferred.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a temporary, 25 hours per week, position and will be based in East Hartford, CT or another location as determined by the State Director.
