Camp Director - NYS DEC Summer Camps Apply
Do you have experience as a Summer Camp Director and are looking for a new opportunity this summer ? NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) is seeking talented staff to work at an environmental education summer camp in 2024: Camp Colby in Saranac Lake, Camp Pack Forest near Lake George, Camp Rushford near Buffalo, or Camp DeBruce near Liberty. As you probably recall, Camp Directors have overall on-site responsibility for camp operations on a 24-hour basis.
This is a unique opportunity to work at a rustic and beautiful summer camp in the Catskills, Adirondacks or Western NY. Our popular and engaging programs draw 1117-year-old youth from across NYS for life changing experiences in the outdoors. The camp season runs from June 3 through August 9 or 16 (depending on the camp) and the work week is from Sunday afternoon through Friday afternoon.
Camp Directors earn $10,600 for 11 weeks, plus room and board. The Director must have a bachelor degree, or be 25 years old, and have at least two full seasons as a Conservation Education Camp Counselor, one full season as a Conservation Education Camp Assistant Director, or one full season as a Camp Director (outside of the DEC program). This is a state position and staff have the option to join the PEF union and the NYS retirement fund. For the right candidate, this can be a reoccurring summer position for several years.
Specific duties include, but not limited to:
- develops and supervises a comprehensive training program for staff and volunteers;
- supervises all camp staff that includes Assistant Director, Health Director, counselors, cook, camp aides and volunteers;
- reviews and evaluates lesson plans and teaching techniques; suggests changes, additions and methods of educational effectiveness;
- completes all required reports, inventories and forms;
- promotes and maintains positive public relations with DEC Operations; health department, sponsors, campers, parents and local community; and
- Counsels problem campers and contacts parents/guardians if needed.
Requirements:
A) Bachelor's Degree (must be in the Natural or Physical Science Fields; Biological or Environmental Sciences; Recreation, Primary, Secondary or Special Education; or Environmental Education)
Or
B) be 25 years old AND HAVE
a. at least two full seasons as a Conservation Education Camp Counselor OR
b. one full season as a Conservation Education Camp Assistant Director OR
c. one full season as a Camp Director at any non-DEC camp PLUS all of the below
- Experience in residential camp setting is required.
- Outdoor pursuits in areas such as hiking, canoeing, backpacking, hunting, fishing, water safety and archery is required.
- Must be certified in first aid courses as required by the NYS Department of Health, such as: American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies or equivalent, American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent & must be in its first year.
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver's license.
