Ames Laboratory is seeking candidates for the position of Carpenter within Facilities and Engineering Services. This position maintains and troubleshoots building infrastructure. Performs work in the repair, service, and maintenance of Laboratory buildings, rooms, door access, equipment, installation of equipment, office furniture and laboratory casework. Work would include locksmithing and door access control, material and equipment transport, erection and disassembly of systems, and fabrication as necessary.
The duties of this position require the ability to lift, carry and/or move 50-100 lbs. occasionally, and 25-50 lbs. frequently. Frequent bending, squatting, and stooping is also required. The ability to attend required courses regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), wear and maintain PPE, and fully adhere to the requirements set forth in the Personal Protective Equipment Program are required by the duties of this position.
The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively with staff, scientists, students, and the public in order to provide excellent customer service. Must have working and operating knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and gas-powered equipment and possess an ability to be trained on new equipment and the ability to apply training to new equipment. Must have a strong general construction-based aptitude. Ability to read and understand equipment schematics, diagrams and manuals. Prepare estimates of materials and time needed to complete tasks This job warrants knowledge of several different skilled trades. A valid Driver's License is required for this position.
