Position Overview

Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to add a journeyman level carpenter to their maintenance team located at Shawnee Correctional Center. This individual should be able to estimate jobs, materials, and time as well as prioritizing these tasks in accordance with the needs of the facility. They will ensure the duties are completed in a safe and organized manner. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.


Job Responsibilities

1. Performs general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction, and alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, or other similar structures at Shawnee Correctional Center.

2. Instructs individuals in custody in the carpentry shop.

3. Meets with plasterers, painters, bricklayers, roofers, glass block layers, and plumbers to perform job planning work as it coincides with carpenter work.

4. Maintains tool control.

5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.

2. Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.


Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

1. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience performing general carpentry in a workplace.

2. Prefers OSHA 10 training or higher.

3. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience mentoring a group of individuals in carpentry tasks in a workplace environment.

4. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience compiling material lists needed to complete projects.

5. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience reading and deciphering blueprints, sketches, and layouts for projects.

6. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience composing reports as needed.

7. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience performing preventative maintenance in the field of carpentry.

Condition of Employment

1. Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.

2. Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.

3. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, scheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour on call capacity.

4. Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
