POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The is seeking Case-Based Learning (CBL) Facilitators. This is a part time, independent contractor position requiring a minimum of 2 half days per week for 8-9 week half semester blocks. Candidates having earned a DO, MD or PhD in a biomedical science with preclinical education experience will be considered.

CBL is the cornerstone of the OCOM preclinical curriculum and consists of a clinical framework for the integration and application of the sciences that are foundational to understanding clinical problems. The primary purpose of CBL is not to diagnose and treat “paper patients”, but to apply learned and identified foundational science topics to explain all the underlying mechanisms of normal and pathological states found in clinical cases. The CBL format facilitates learning not only of factual information, but also of communication skills and group interactions. Learning how to learn is of great importance and is an investment in the future. The goals of CBL are most effectively reached when the group works together as a team in which each member actively contributes to the group’s understanding, actively listens to (and hears) other members’ contributions, and actively supports other members in the learning process. This form of learning enhances long-term memory through application, repetition and recall. As a result, students will become self-directed life-long learners that are adept at critical thinking skills.

All candidates are expected to become proficient facilitators. Training will be provided.

Please note that this is not a traditional teaching position. The curriculum features principles of self-directed and active learning modalities including spaced and spiraled learning. This is not a clinical position or related to third and fourth year clinical rotations.

FIrst and second year students participate in CBL twice a week. The position requires a commitment for 2 days per week minimum on Tuesday morning (8 am -12 pm) and Thursday Morning (8 am -12 pm) for OMS-I and/or Tuesday afternoon (1 pm -5 pm) and Friday morning (8 am -12 pm) for OMS-II for each semester of participation. Semesters are broken into approximately 9 consecutive week blocks. Each morning and afternoon has 2 sessions each. Training will be provided.

Current lab facilitators do not need to reapply.

Interested candidates are encouraged to explore and review the current curricular approach at academic appointment is a separate application process which can be found on the OCOM Web site and mandatory part of the hiring process: Successful appointment is a requirement for the position.
