Job Description

Summary:
The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) works as a key member of the surgical team, assisting surgeons, anesthesiologists, and registered nurses in the delivery of patient care before, during, and after surgery. The CST ensures sterile field maintenance, prepares instrumentation, handles surgical equipment, and provides technical support across various surgical specialties including general, ortho, vascular, neuro, GYN, ENT, and robotics.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain a sterile operating room environment in accordance with AORN and facility protocols.

  • Assemble, check, and operate surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies prior to procedures.

  • Anticipate surgeon's needs and ensure readiness of appropriate instruments and materials.

  • Assist with positioning, draping, and prepping patients for surgery.

  • Handle specimens properly and ensure correct labeling and transfer to pathology.

  • Collaborate with the perioperative team to ensure efficient case turnover and patient safety.

  • Manage and maintain surgical instruments, including scopes, drills, and electrosurgical units.

  • Participate in quality improvement, infection control, and laser safety programs.

  • Take on scheduled on-call duties, including evenings and weekends, as assigned.

  • Demonstrate adaptability across multiple surgical specialties including trauma, orthopedic, neuro, and robotics.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum Experience: 2 years of recent experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute hospital setting.

  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted with solid references and relevant experience.

  • Charting System: Epic (preferred).

  • Trauma Level II experience preferred.

  • Teaching or community hospital experience highly preferred.

  • Travel experience: Not required.

  • Must be able to manage 1:2 OR ratio and function independently in fast-paced, high-acuity surgical cases.

  • Must participate in on-call rotation (2 3 weeknights/month and every 8th weekend).

  • 48-hour workweeks not approved.

  • Must maintain aseptic and sterile technique compliance at all times.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of recent operating room experience covering a variety of surgical services (general, ortho, neuro, vascular, GYN, ENT, robotics).

  • Previous experience in Level II trauma or teaching hospital settings preferred.

License/Certification:

  • NBSTSA certification (CST) required.

  • BLS (AHA) required.

Skills:

  • Core Surgical Expertise:

    • Aseptic technique, specimen handling, sharps and laser safety, and sterile field management.

    • Instrument setup, case cart assembly, crash cart familiarity, and fiber-optic/scoping equipment care.

  • Specialty Experience:

    • General Surgery: Appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, mastectomy, thyroidectomy.

    • Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, open reduction, total hip/knee replacements.

    • Neuro: Craniotomy, VP shunt, laminectomy, cervical/lumbar fusions.

    • Vascular: AAA repair, carotid endarterectomy, fem-pop bypass.

    • Gynecology: D&C, abdominal hysterectomy, anterior/posterior repair.

    • ENT: Endoscopic sinus surgery, tonsillectomy, tracheostomy.

    • Robotics: Da Vinci Xi platform colorectal, GYN, ortho, neuro, and urology cases.

    • Bariatrics: Gastric bypass, gastric sleeve.

  • Preferred Technical Skills:

    • Drills and electrosurgical units*

    • Laser safety and scope care*

    • Robotic surgery assistance (Da Vinci Xi)*
