Minimum Qualifications NYSED Certification as a Level I Teaching Assistant (Must obtain Level III within 4 years of appointment. Recommendations for extension of Level I will only be made if all requirements for Level II have been met except the required work experience) Completion of required state workshops, IE. Child Abuse Detection & Reporting, School Violence Prevention, and DASA. Primary Activities Work with individual students or groups of students on special instructional projects. Provide the teacher with information about students which will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning and behavioral experiences. Assist students in the use of available instructional resources, and assist in the development of instructional materials. Utilize own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in such areas as: foreign languages, arts, crafts, music and similar subjects. Assist in related instructional work as required. Assist students with specific health related activities as appropriate. Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records (e.g. lessons, attendance, pencils, paper, teaching supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing written reports, or meeting mandated requirements. Performs general clerical tasks for the purpose of helping the teacher get instructional materials ready. Perform other related duties as assigned. Note: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to carry out instruction furnished in written or oral form. Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications. Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others. Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work. Ability to report work orally and in writing to supervisor as required. Physical Demands is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit. Is regularly required to climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and to reach above the head and reach forward. Is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to talk and hear. Occasionally required to lift and/or push up to 50 pounds. Must have specific vision abilities for close vision, distance vision, depth perception and tell the difference between colors Work Environment The noise level in the work environment is typical for a school environment.
