Overview
A chemical technician is a highly skilled professional responsible for assisting chemists and chemical engineers in developing and testing chemical products. They may:
- Test chemicals for impurities.
- Perform quality assurance.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Assess the environmental impact of chemicals.
- Conduct regular testing to identify the chemical composition of products or samples.
Key Responsibilities
- Inventory Management & Documentation:
- Track inventory.
- Prioritize orders.
- Maintain lab equipment.
- Document processes during each chemical test.
- Regulation Compliance:
- Follow environmental regulations.
- Review updated safety protocols from OSHA and NFPA.
- Solution Preparation:
- Prepare chemical solutions.
- Safely store solutions considering temperature requirements.
- Complete chemical orders.
- Testing & Troubleshooting:
- Conduct lab tests to ensure safety.
- Record and troubleshoot issues for assessment.
- Results Analysis & Reporting:
- Compile and interpret lab results.
- Identify and correct anomalies.
- Generate graphical reports for senior personnel.
- Process Monitoring:
- Monitor chemical processes.
- Resolve production issues in collaboration with relevant teams.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Sterilize work surfaces and equipment.
- Replace worn or damaged equipment as needed.
- Training:
- Train new technicians on chemical processes.
- Periodically update technicians' knowledge of chemical technology.
Qualifications
- Education:
- An associate degree in chemistry or a related field of science, with a minimum of 12 semester hours in chemistry, is required.
- Preferred Experience:
- Boiler/water analysis.
- Water treatment plant operations.
- Industrial or manufacturing environments.
- Technical Skills:
- Competence in using, calibrating, and maintaining lab instrumentation and equipment.
- Familiarity with proper analytical methods and techniques.
- Additional Skills:
- Familiarity with mechanical parts and repair.
- Knowledge in the production of deionized water.
