The Department of Agriculture is seeking a driven leader with a background in identification and regulatory control of plant pests, including insects, nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses that impact Pennsylvania's natural resources and abundant flora. This position is responsible for administering Plant Protection Division programs within the Bureau of Plant Industry, in support of the agriculture industry. This position oversees all programs including plant pest survey, taxonomy, diagnostics, apiary inspection, and plant merchant inspection/certification; oversees implementation and enforcement of Commonwealth statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to plant protection, and provides analysis and technical support for proposed changes to laws and regulations; and prepares the annual budget for the Division after consultation with the division’s program staff, and tracks spending for PPA, Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS), and other cooperative agreement projects.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 5 days per pay period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as an Entomology Program Manager or one year as a Plant Pathology Program Manager; or 
  • Five years of professional regulatory experience in plant protection, which included one year of supervisory experience, and a bachelor's degree in one of the biological or agricultural sciences; or 
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training, which included one year of supervision over regulatory plant protection staff.
