Definition and Purpose 

Under the supervision of the Coordinator - Outdoor Recreation, the Climbing Park Supervisor is responsible for the Climbing Parks daily operation. This position is expected to provide customer service including: belaying climbers, answering questions, maintaining park area cleanliness, greeting customers, enforcing policies, opening/closing the Climbing Park and being responsible for individuals using the Climbing Park. Additionally, ASI employees are expected to provide a safe, enjoyable, service-oriented environment for customers/participants at all times.

Requirements

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience 

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units Graduate students must carry 4 units. 
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification required 
  • Communication skills adequate to deal with the public, students, faculty and staff 
  • Knowledge and experience in climbing and belaying other climbers 
  • Knowledge and ability to set-up a top-rope system 
  • Knowledge and ability to tie various rope knots 
  • Knowledge and ability to use various climbing harness systems 
  • Ability to set-up and close the Climbing Park autonomously 
  • Neat, clean, tactful and courteous to all customers and visitors; promptness and attention to detail are essential 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Supervise and manage all Climbing Park participants 
  • Ensure a safe environment during special events 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Open and close the Climbing Park 
  • Ensure receipt of signed waiver prior to customer participation 
  • Belay and Spot participants 
  • Fit harness to all roped climbers 
  • Supervise climbing group special events 
  • Route setting as necessary 
  • Climbing Park maintenance as necessary 
  • Ensure safe and responsible operation of the Climbing Park at all times 
  • Maintain a helpful, fun, professional, open atmosphere of the Climbing Park area at all times 
  • Educate customers about Climbing Park policies and procedures 
  • Resolve customer disputes 
  • Oversee and keep the customer use zones, such as the benches and climbing surface area, clean and clear of items 
  • Adhere to all ASI departmental policies and procedures 
  • Provide quality customer service for all staff and customers 
  • Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity 
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management 
  • Perform equipment maintenance when necessary 
  • Be familiar with evacuation plan for staff area 
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training 

Other Duties and Responsibilities 

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause. 

Benefits

Compensation and Hours 

  • Hourly Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour
  • Hourly Pay Range: $16.00 per hour - $16.00 per hour 
  • Maximum 20 hours per week. 

Requires summer availability

May require late nights, weekends, and holidays

Requires a minimum of 3 consecutive quarters
