Job Description: Job Summary:
The Dangerous Goods Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the safe and compliant transportation, storage, and handling of hazardous materials for global products. This role involves regulatory compliance, risk assessment, training, and continuous improvement in the management of dangerous goods across various regions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all applicable local, federal, and international regulations related to the transportation and storage of dangerous goods (e.g., DOT, IATA, 49 CFR, ADR, IMDG and TDG, OSHA).
- Monitor changes in regulations and update company policies and procedures accordingly.
- Prepare and submit necessary documentation and reports to regulatory bodies.
- Provide recommendations to product managers on opportunities for de-classification of dangerous goods.
2. Risk Management:
- Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for the transportation and storage of hazardous materials.
- Implement safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks associated with dangerous goods.
- Collaborate with distribution sites and work on the risk assessment for shipping dangerous goods.
3. Training and Development:
- Develop and deliver training programs for employees handling dangerous goods.
- Ensure staff are knowledgeable about the latest regulations and safety practices.
- Responsible for training maintenance and record keeping.
4. Operational Support:
- Provide guidance and support to operations teams on the classification, packaging, labeling, and transportation of dangerous goods.
- Collaborate with logistics partners and vendors to ensure safe and compliant transportation.
5. Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices in the management of dangerous goods.
- Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
6. Incident Management:
- Investigate incidents involving dangerous goods and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
- Maintain records of incidents and corrective actions taken.
Skills Required:
- In-depth knowledge of dangerous goods regulations (DOT, IATA, IMDG, OSHA, etc.).
- Experience with risk assessment and hazard classification.
- Proficiency in preparing and reviewing regulatory documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to conduct detailed risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to deliver training programs and communicate complex regulatory information clearly.
- High level of attention to detail to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards.
- Thoroughness in preparing documentation and conducting inspections.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Education and Experience:
- Certification in dangerous goods handling and transportation (e.g., IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) certification, DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation certification).
- OSHA certification (e.g., OSHA 30-hour General Industry certification) is preferred.
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CDGP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)) are advantageous.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Logistics, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in dangerous goods management or a related field.
- Experience in a global or multi-regional role is preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing regulations and requirements.
- May require occasional travel to company sites, regulatory agencies, or industry conferences.
