Job Summary:

The Department of Medicine (DOM), in partnership with the UW Clinical Trials Institute (CTI), has developed a shared infrastructure to promote and support clinical research activities across DOM. This partnership encourages clinical research professionals and participants to advance discovery and research in the prevention, detection, and treatment of disease to help improve the health of individuals, families, and communities across Wisconsin and beyond. Our exceptionally talented workforce provides care, support, and information to clinical trials participants; resources, training, and guidance to research professionals; and opportunities for industry partners to advance groundbreaking medical research.

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is seeking a Clinical Research Accountant to provide comprehensive financial support services to faculty conducting clinical research (industry and investigator-initiated studies). This position will work closely with investigators, research coordinators, industry sponsors, contract research organizations (CROs) and others to monitor expenditures, prepare and reconcile financial data, submit and oversee research billing compliance activities, and manage DOM's research participant payment process.

The incumbent will be expected to serve in a variety of capacities, including but not limited to, reviewing, processing and/or approving transactions, monitoring expenditures, managing research billing activities, working with DOM leadership and sponsors to ensure payment, and reviewing study calendars and budget setup for clinical trials. In addition, the incumbent will provide setup, processing, and management of the Advarra participant payment system for subjects engaged in clinical research activities within DOM.

The incumbent will serve as a member of DOM's Office of Research Services and report to DOM's Associate Director for Research. The CTI Associate Director for Finance will provide day-to-day oversight, guidance, and training for this position, while working closely with DOM ORS leadership to ensure alignment with the research goals of both units.

Responsibilities:

Works directly with principal investigator and research staff to budget, monitor expenditures, and reconcile financial data for sponsored programs. May directly process and/or approve accounting transactions such as cost transfers, procurement, sub award management, and financial processing related to sponsored project management. May review and approve transactions on behalf of an intermediate unit or center.
  • 25% Assists principal investigators with financial management of sponsored program budgets and directs day-to-day fiscal transactions
  • 30% Prepares and processes financial reporting and/or invoicing information
  • 5% Provides expertise and advice related to procurement and allowable charges
  • 20% Reviews financial expenditures for accuracy on sponsored grants and contracts
  • 10% Provides oversight and management of Advarra clinical research participant payment system on behalf of DOM
  • 10% Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements solutions as needed

* At least 2 years of finance/accounting experience preferred, preferably in a clinical research setting.
* At least 2 years of experience in research/contract management and oversight activities preferred.

Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $60,000 - $81,650. Starting salary will depend on experience and qualifications and may be higher for extremely well-qualified candidates.
