Cristo Rey San Diego seeks a mission-driven, innovative, collaborative, student focused, and community-centered College Counselor (9th/10th Grade Lead) to serve as part of the college counseling team at Cristo Rey San Diego. Assistant Principal of School Academics reports directly to the schools Director of College and Alumni Advising.

About the School:

Cristo Rey San Diego High School is the 37th school in a growing national network of Catholic high schools recognized for transforming Catholic education through a unique integration of rigorous academics, professional experience, and spiritual formation. For the 2023-2024 school year, Cristo Rey San Diego will graduate its first class of first-generation Seniors of limited financial means. Cristo Reys innovative model calls for our students to attend class four days per week and work in a professional setting five days per month through our Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). While some of our students will enter high school below grade-level academically, it is the collective mission of our staff to ensure that our students gain admission toand ultimately graduate fromcollege. In pursuit of that goal, Cristo Rey has a longer school day and an extended academic year, and our teachers innovate, plan, reflect, and practice so that they maximize their impact in the classroom.

Position Summary

Collaborates Directly with Students, Parents, Faculty, and College Admissions Representatives

The role of the College Counselor at CRSD is to work with students and parents on a group and individual basis to gain an understanding of the college admissions and financial aid process. This individual will serve as the lead counselor for 9th & 10th grade students. This College Counselor will help direct students toward college readiness and broaden their opportunities for success in and through college. The College Counselor will assist in managing parent outreach and education efforts for the College Counseling Team. This job description reflects managements assignment of essential job responsibilities; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

The position requires an extraordinary commitment to serving urban, low-income youth most of whom will be the first in their family to pursue a degree through the implementation of a comprehensive, four-year college counseling program. The position requires extensive experience with the college admissions process, a strong sense of low-income students and family needs in preparing for college, and the ability to manage key relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, teach and grade College & Career Readiness classes (9th & 10th) that support the college counseling process
  • Promote and teach executive functioning and student success skills within the College & Career Readiness
  • Promote and coordinate the application process for viable summer programs for 9th & 10th grade students
  • Support the planning and implementation of workshops for parents and students on key topics related to the college admissions and financial aid processes (on occasion, for faculty/staff)
  • Under the direction of the Director of College and Alumni Advising, guide and assist 12th grade students and their parents through the entire college and financial aid application process, along with writing letters of recommendation
  • Actively research all aspects of college counseling: financial aid, scholarships, applications, and standards
  • Collaborate in establishing, pursuing, and tracking clear school and department goals for college admissions, enrollment, persistence, and completion
  • Building and celebrating a school-wide college-going culture
  • Support the work of the College Counseling Team and team with office initiatives and projects
  • Participate in Cristo Rey Network College Initiatives professional development
  • Establish and maintain relationships with college representatives on behalf of the school and the students
  • Support college representative visits to CRSD campus and college fairs
  • Coordinate/support logistics for on-campus college experiences (college visits)
  • Attend required staff development and training sessions throughout the year
