JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Commercial Lines Underwriter I is responsible for understanding and applying insurance coverage, rules and guidelines, as well as executing the underwriting decision-making process according to Company underwriting philosophy. Work is performed under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Determines and obtains information needed to effectively evaluate exposure to loss.
  • Applies good judgment in making independent decisions about risks under consideration.
  • Selects, rejects or offers acceptable alternatives for a given risk, within guidelines and philosophy established by the Company, using specialized knowledge and other pertinent information, such as underwriting reports, frequency and severity measures and policy payment history.
  • Communicates with Company associates, independent agents, CSRs and other insurance service organizations effectively and clearly.
  • Provides guidance to agents and CSRs on basic policy features, programs and coverages.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance in meeting a defined work schedule.
  • Provides outstanding service to internal and external customers with a positive, friendly attitude.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent preferred.
  • Demonstrates sufficient knowledge to have a clear understanding of insurance coverage and risk selection.
