Full-time

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Community Manager

Location: Bay Area, CA

Bay Area Disc Association is seeking applicants for a Community Manager position. This role focuses on building a new model for recruiting and retaining interested individuals from communities who have not historically been well served by our Ultimate Frisbee programs, namely queer folks of color. The intention behind this role is to build better pathways to support and develop new players so they choose to continue their journey into BADAs existing leagues and tournaments.

BADA is specifically focusing this role on recruiting and retaining queer folks of color because as a community-based non-profit, we believe it is our duty to welcome and include all Bay Area folks who are interested in playing our sport. While we have tested different broadly scoped DEI initiatives and entry-level programs over the years, we have yet to make substantial progress on our Community Diversity and Equity priority within our 5-Year Strategic Plan. We believe that by narrowing our focus for this role to best serve and support queer folks of color, we will make a far bigger impact on helping our sport grow and fulfill our commitment to serving the Bay Area community as a whole.

We believe that a strong candidate will be someone who:

  • Loves meeting and building connections with people of all backgrounds
  • Takes strong initiative in decision making and execution of tasks
  • Is a curious problem-solver, not deterred by failure
  • Has a passion for making Ultimate accessible and welcoming to everyone

What you would be responsible for

Responsibilities for this role over the next 9 months will consist of: research & development, program operations, tracking & reporting and communication.

Research & Development

  • Research, interview, collaborate, build and test ways to better serve and support queer folks of color interested in playing Ultimate
  • Develop ongoing personal connections with community members, partners, leaders as well as other stakeholders to ensure design and implementation of this new initiative is successful
  • Develop a detailed initial vision and sustainability (financial, operational) strategy for this new initiative, in coordination with the Executive Director and Board of Directors

Program Operations

  • Comprehensively manage programs, including:
  • Creating, maintaining, and closing out budgets for all programs
  • Securing venues and required event amenities
  • Creating and maintaining program registration pages
  • Providing customer service and sales assistance for online registrations
  • Recruiting, managing and debriefing program personnel
  • Purchasing, distributing and tracking program supplies
  • Administering financial aid requests
  • Sending timely communications and information to event participants
  • Sending timely post-program emails and feedback surveys
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with potential and current partners, including: field offices, city parks & recreation departments, vendors, organizations and community leaders etc.
  • Oversee the training and credentialing of any program support staff, coaches or volunteers
  • Coordinating program schedules with other program staff and any relevant community partners and/or leaders
  • Work closely and coordinate effectively with other program staff to ensure high retention of recruited players into existing BADA leagues and tournaments

Tracking & Reporting

  • Track and report progress on this new initiative to Executive Director and/or Board of Directors
  • Engage community leaders in the ongoing processes of developing new outreach efforts and programs, including regularly requesting feedback on programs and partnerships for their improvement and expansion
  • Manage and track discretionary funds designated to this new initiative
  • Assist the Executive Director with developing and writing letters of inquiry, concept papers and/or grant proposals as needed
  • Execute, track and write reports for any received grant funds

Communication

  • Communicate and coordinate extensively with other BADA Program Directors (weekly staff meetings, operations meetings, messaging in Slack, etc.)
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with participants, leaders and community members (organizers, coaches, captains, parents, players, volunteers, contractors, partners, vendors, sponsors, facilities, etc.)
  • Review and update relevant public pages with program information, focusing on accessibility
  • Collaborate with and provide content for communications personnel to ensure that programs are promoted effectively on BADAs website, email and social media

To apply, please send the following to Jen Pashley (Executive Director) at jen.pashley@bayareadisc.org:

We strive to make the application and hiring process accessible to anyone who is interested. We also strongly encourage Black, Indigenous, people of color, trans, non-binary and gender nonconforming individuals, as well as LGBTQIA+ candidates to apply.
