Position Highlights

The University of Arizona Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) supports the health and well-being of families in communities with low access to resources to make healthy changes in homes and neighborhoods. From local gardens in the community, to working with children's schools to create healthy environments, SNAP-Ed provides families opportunities to be active and healthy their way. (Funding comes from the Federal Government through Arizona Department of Health Services' AZ Health Zone.) The University of Arizona Maricopa County Cooperative Extension provides services to 5 communities in Maricopa County. The Community Outreach Professional I position will work in South Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Maryvale and Salt River-Pima Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) to engage community members and stakeholders to understand the local active living environment, to increase physical activity opportunities, to improve use of current infrastructure and to support municipal planning and policies that improves the built environment. Community engagement is a key part of this position, therefore Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred and a flexible schedule with evenings and weekends is required. This position will require collaboration and coordination with diverse partners such as community members, local leaders, active living advocates, faith leaders and government agencies.

Applicants would benefit from understanding Trauma-Informed Principles, Health Equity and community engagement practices and from having experience working with diverse populations that have low access to food resources.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Increase usability and access to physical activity resources by establishing physical activity groups for adults, working to improve features and amenities at physical activity sites, and developing agreements that give community residents access to additional physical activity opportunities.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and implement Policy, Systems and Environment strategies designed to improve use of the built environment like encouraging active transportation, contributing to creation of walking/biking paths and supporting the creation of new spaces like parks/trails.
  • Engage community residents, organizations, businesses, and stakeholders to develop specific strategies that address opportunities to improve physical activity in the community.
  • Conduct research and meet grant requirements, data collection, and reporting (SARN, SEEDS, Collection Summaries) for area of responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Ability to effectively facilitate conversations with diverse partners and local residents.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience may be required.
  • Flexible schedule with evenings and weekends required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • *A certification for any type of physical activity is preferred.
  • * Bilingual in Spanish/English is preferred but not required.
