About the job
The machinist will be responsible for operating machine tools to produce precision metal parts that meet precise specifications, by setting up and operating of a wide variety of machine tool equipment. They will read blueprints to understand customer specifications and use a variety of tools to set-up, operate, or repair the machine.
Essential Functions / Duties
Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques.
Technically proficient in the machining trade.
Is self-motivated and proactive in addressing needs and issues.
Read blueprints, sketches, and follows verbal instructions.
Understand upcoming work and requirements, communicate needs before they impede production.
Maintains dimensional logs for all the work and jobs that go across their machines.
Understands the applicable sections of the SMC QC manual.
Keeps work area clean and orderly
Perform preventative maintenance checks- QC role starts at the machine
Understand safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety.
Reports the malfunction of equipment to proper authority.

Reports to the department lead
Position is based at Plant 3 at 3911 13th Ave N Birmingham, Alabama 35234
Fulltime Monday thru Thursday (four) 10- hour shifts 4:30p-2a 10% increase on 2nd Shift Occasional Overtime on Friday or Saturday. Pay based on Experience.
Prefer someone with 5-10 years experience on CNC due to this being 2nd Shift.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Prior experience in heavy construction machining
Self-starter with good customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor, with the ability to maintain a good working relationship with management and co-workers
Ability to read and understand blueprints
Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing up to 50 pounds
Must possess openness to learning new skills and collaborating with other team members to create solutions
Operate various types of machinery used in the trade such as milling and turning machines
Preferred
Must have previous CNC Machining experience (Vertical and Horizontal Lathes- Boring Mills)
Must have knowledge of Basic Type Programming
Education requirements or equivalent experience:
Minimum high school diploma or GED or equivalent
One year of technical school or five years of machining experience.
Completion of four-year apprentice program in a Machining (We offer an apprenticeship program )
Able to read, write basic math (fractions, decimals, and trigonometry).
Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gages, etc.
Read and interpret complicated drawings and blueprints.
Able to operate overhead and jib cranes.
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
Able to solve complex technical problems with limited direction.
Versatility to do different jobs is preferred.
