Job Description:  This position involves a summer engineering/computer sciences internship position where the successful candidate will receive hands-on technical experience from a growing GIS consulting firm in central Illinois.  As an intern, you will gain practical experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data analysis. You will work closely with our GIS team to support the design, development, and maintenance of GIS-based applications and tools.  This role will provide exposure to the application of GIS technology in real-world scenarios, helping to solve complex spatial problems and enabling data-driven decision-making.  This is a full time (40 hours per week), seasonal/temporary position.  Exact start and end dates will be discussed with final candidates.

Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in creating, updating, and managing GIS datasets and spatial databases.
  • Support the development of GIS applications, tools, and models.
  • Perform geospatial data analysis and visualization to support various projects.
  • Collaborate with other team members on spatial data collection and mapping projects.
  • Contribute to the integration of GIS with other business systems.
  • Participate in field data collection efforts, as needed.

Requirements: 

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of college level courses. 
  • Basic knowledge of GIS concepts, principles, and software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, or JavaScript.
  • Basic knowledge of web development frameworks or cloud computing technologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, written and verbal.

Preferred Experience:  

Preference will be given to candidates with additional experience in any of the following areas:

  • Previous experience with GIS projects, internships, or coursework.
  • Familiarity with GIS-related APIs and tools (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Leaflet, Google Maps API).
  • Knowledge of spatial databases such as PostGIS or SQL Server Spatial.
  • Experience with scripting or automation of GIS tasks using Python, R, or ModelBuilder.
