Construction Laborer – Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
The Construction Laborer supports daily field operations by performing a variety of physical tasks essential to project execution. Candidates must demonstrate reliability, safety awareness, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment.
1. Basic Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred (not always required based on experience)
- Minimum of 1–2 years of construction or general labor experience preferred
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check (as required for federal/DOD/VA/NASA projects)
- Valid driver’s license preferred
2. Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
- Capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials up to 50–75 lbs
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces or at heights
- Able to work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, humidity)
3. Technical & Job Skills
- Basic knowledge of construction tools, equipment, and materials
- Ability to follow instructions from supervisors, foremen, and skilled trades personnel
- Experience with tasks such as:
- Site preparation and cleanup
- Material handling and staging
- Assisting carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians
- Demolition and debris removal
- Familiarity with construction site safety practices and PPE usage
4. Safety & Compliance Requirements
- Must comply with OSHA safety standards and site-specific safety plans
- OSHA 10 certification preferred (OSHA 30 a plus)
- Ability to adhere to EM 385-1-1 (for USACE/NASA projects) and other federal safety requirements
- Willingness to participate in daily safety briefings (Toolbox Talks) and follow all safety protocols
5. Work Environment Expectations
- Ability to work on active construction sites, including:
- Industrial facilities
- Healthcare/occupied facilities (requiring infection control measures)
- Government installations with controlled access
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, or night shifts as required
6. Soft Skills & Work Ethic
- Strong work ethic and dependability
- Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively
- Willingness to learn and take direction
- Punctuality and consistent attendance required
7. Preferred (But Not Required)
- Experience working on federal projects (USACE, VA, NAVFAC, NASA)
- Knowledge of infection control procedures (ICRA/PCRA) for healthcare environments
- Equipment operation experience (skid steer, forklift, etc.)
- First Aid/CPR certification
