Construction Laborer – Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

The Construction Laborer supports daily field operations by performing a variety of physical tasks essential to project execution. Candidates must demonstrate reliability, safety awareness, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment.

1. Basic Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred (not always required based on experience)
• Minimum of 1–2 years of construction or general labor experience preferred
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check (as required for federal/DOD/VA/NASA projects)
• Valid driver’s license preferred

2. Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
• Capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials up to 50–75 lbs
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces or at heights
• Able to work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, humidity)

3. Technical & Job Skills

• Basic knowledge of construction tools, equipment, and materials
• Ability to follow instructions from supervisors, foremen, and skilled trades personnel
• Experience with tasks such as:
• • Site preparation and cleanup
  • Material handling and staging
  • Assisting carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians
  • Demolition and debris removal
• Familiarity with construction site safety practices and PPE usage

4. Safety & Compliance Requirements

• Must comply with OSHA safety standards and site-specific safety plans
• OSHA 10 certification preferred (OSHA 30 a plus)
• Ability to adhere to EM 385-1-1 (for USACE/NASA projects) and other federal safety requirements
• Willingness to participate in daily safety briefings (Toolbox Talks) and follow all safety protocols

5. Work Environment Expectations

• Ability to work on active construction sites, including:
• • Industrial facilities
  • Healthcare/occupied facilities (requiring infection control measures)
  • Government installations with controlled access
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, or night shifts as required

6. Soft Skills & Work Ethic

• Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively
• Willingness to learn and take direction
• Punctuality and consistent attendance required

7. Preferred (But Not Required)

• Experience working on federal projects (USACE, VA, NAVFAC, NASA)
• Knowledge of infection control procedures (ICRA/PCRA) for healthcare environments
• Equipment operation experience (skid steer, forklift, etc.)
• First Aid/CPR certification
