We are partnering with a market-leading mechanical construction firm in the Greater Boston area to hire a Controller to lead its accounting organization and partner directly with executive leadership.

Reporting to the CFO, this role oversees a 10-person accounting team within a complex, union, project-driven environment. The Controller will own financial reporting, job costing integrity, and operational partnership across the business. This is a highly visible leadership position with long-term growth potential.

The ideal candidate is a CPA with deep construction accounting expertise who has operated in a WIP-driven, percentage-of-completion environment and understands the realities of partnering with Project Management and field operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a 10-person team across GL, AP, AR/Billing, and Payroll
  • Own monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
  • Oversee WIP schedules, revenue recognition (percent-complete), and margin analysis
  • Manage progress billing, pay applications, retainage, and collections strategy
  • Partner with Project Managers to ensure accurate forecasting and job cost reporting
  • Oversee union payroll complexity including multi-rate and fringe allocations
  • Lead audit coordination, tax compliance, and internal controls
  • Drive process improvements and optimize construction ERP utilization

Qualifications

  • CPA required
  • Progressive accounting leadership experience
  • Significant construction industry experience (mechanical, MEP, specialty subcontractor, or large GC environment preferred)
  • Deep expertise in job costing, WIP reporting, change orders, and margin fade/gain analysis
  • Experience in union payroll environments
  • Proven leadership of 8–15+ person accounting teams
  • Construction ERP experience (CMiC strongly preferred; Sage/Timberline or similar acceptable)

This opportunity is best suited for candidates currently operating in union-heavy, project-based construction environments. Candidates without meaningful construction accounting experience will not be considered.
