The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to join our team. The Controller will report to the CFO, and plays a vital role in directing the principles, practices and procedures of the accounting department that services several operating companies. This individual will assist in overseeing the full range of day-to-day accounting activites and participating in the leadership and training of the team.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; 1 hour lunch break (unpaid)

JOB FUNCTIONS:

include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Assists the CFO, finance staff and department directors by preparing a variety of detailed accounting, statistical, and narrative financial statements or reports requiring analysis and interpretation.
  2. Reviews and analyzes grants, contracts and proposals for fiscal soundness and adherence to generally accepted accounting principles and Tribal policy.
  3. Collects data on direct, indirect, and overhead costs of operation as they relate to the setting of rates and fees and assists with preparing Indirect Cost Proposal data.
  4. Recommends and assists in the implementation of new or revised accounting systems, procedures, and records.
  5. Prepare month end close including reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, research and correct discrepancies (Cash, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Intercompany Accounts, etc.).
  6. Review monthly income and trial balance statements, and prepare monthly closing entries (deferred revenue, indirect costs, and reclassifications).
  7. Perform month end close of financial records
  8. Prepare monthly drawdowns report for grant awards for CFO approval.
  9. Prepare documents with proper G/L numbers for Accounts Receivable entry of payments (draws and checks).
  10. Daily review of acceptable costs in accordance with Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah policies and procedures, and budget availability.
  11. Review reconciled monthly financial statements and reconcile expenditures to grant draws.
  12. Prepare financial reports for grantors as required per award terms and Tribal Government as requested.
  13. Record new awards, read contracts, establish due dates for financial reporting to grantors.
  14. Maintain all award files (modifications, budgets, draws, correspondence, financial reports, etc.).
  15. Work with the CFO and department managers regarding missing program reports or other documents. Review awards that are closing two months prior to expiration date so that the CFO, department directors can follow up to ensure timely spending of awards.
  16. Prepare annual Audit work papers for each program and related audit schedules. Be present and available as needed to assist during the annual audit.
  17. Maintain neat and accurate filing systems for all accounting records (journal entries, correspondence, awards, etc.).
  18. Work with the accounting team to establish written standard operating procedures as they relate to all aspects of Accounting.
  19. Maintains the confidentiality of all Finance Department items.
  20. Performs other related duties (special projects and requests) as deemed necessary.
  21. Other duties as assigned to support the efficient operations of the Tribe.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong Organizational skills 
  • Willingness to learn new tools and technologies 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization and community. 
  • Ability to manage and perform with a high degree of autonomy, organization, and adaptability. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate respect for and awareness of Native American customs, traditions and socioeconomic needs. 
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking with large and small groups of different managerial, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds. 
  • Must be willing to travel as needed. 

Requirements

General Requirements:

  • Must be insurable through the Tribe’s vehicle insurance required.
  • Must pass a criminal and fingerprint background check according to P.L. 101-630 standards required.
  • Must be able to pass an alcohol/drug screening required.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university required. 
  • Three (3) years’ experience working in accounting required.
  • Preferred Two (2) years’ experience working in a health care setting.
  • Preferred one (1) year experience with working with an Indian Health organization.

 

License & Certifications:

  • Must possess, maintain, and provide proof of a valid Driver License required.
  • Preferred Certified Public Accountant.
