Controls EngineerArgonne National Laboratory is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to lead building automation and HVAC control system initiatives across our research campus. This role focuses on programming, optimizing, and maintaining Johnson Controls Metasys building automation systems to ensure efficient operation of complex HVAC infrastructure that supports world-class scientific research. The successful candidate will contribute to our mission of scientific excellence by serving as a technical expert in controls engineering, driving performance optimization and system reliability.Key ResponsibilitiesControls Engineering & Programming:Design, program, and implement control sequences for HVAC systems using Johnson Controls Metasys building automation platformDevelop and modify direct digital control (DDC) logic, graphics, and system applications to optimize building performance and energy efficiencyCreate and maintain control system documentation including sequence of operations, points lists, network architecture diagramsEngineer and maintain control solutions for complex HVAC systems including VAV systems, central plants (chillers, boilers, cooling towers), air handling units, and laboratoriesPerform analysis and implement control strategies to reduce operational costs while maintaining occupant comfort and environmental requirementsSystem Integration & Optimization:Configure and integrate controllers (SNEs, SNCs, CGM field controllers) into the enterprise building automation networkDevelop and optimize control sequences based on industry best practicesCommission new control systems and verify proper operation through functional performance testingAnalyze system performance data using trending and analytics tools to identify optimization opportunitiesImplement advanced control strategies including demand-based ventilation, optimal start/stop, load reset schedules, and predictive algorithmsTechnical Troubleshooting & Support:Assist Building Maintenance group by diagnosing and resolving complex control system issues using systematic troubleshooting methodologies and diagnostic toolsDebug control programming errors and optimize code performance for improved system response and temperature stabilityRespond to critical system alarms and implement effective corrective actions to minimize impact on facility operationsProvide technical expertise to Project Teams during HVAC system start-ups, commissioning activities, and retrofit projectsPerform calibration and verification of sensors, actuators, and control devices to ensure accurate system operationCollaboration & Project Management:Assist in development of scope and oversee execution of capital improvement/ retrofit controls projects from design through commissioningCollaborate with mechanical engineers, contractors, and operations staff to implement integrated building system solutionsManage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining quality standards and meeting deadlinesMentor junior technical staff and share controls engineering knowledge across the organizationCommunicate technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences including facility managers, researchers, and executive leadershipPosition RequirementsEducation:Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, Building Automation, or related technical disciplineTechnical Expertise:Required:Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience programming and configuring HVAC building automation systemsStrong understanding of HVAC system design principles and mechanical systems including air handlers, VAV systems, chilled water plants, hot water systems, pumping configurations, and heat recovery systemsExperience developing control sequences for energy optimization and demand response applicationsWorking knowledge of network communications and system integration standardsAbility to interpret mechanical drawings, control diagrams, and Piping and Instrumentation DiagramsProfessional Competencies:Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with systematic approach to troubleshootingStrong verbal and written communication abilities, including technical documentation skillsProven project management capabilities with ability to prioritize competing demandsSelf-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of collaborative teamsCommitment to safety in all aspects of work, particularly regarding electrical systemsDetail-oriented with strong organizational skillsPreferred Qualifications:Previous experience in laboratory, research campus, or mission-critical facility environmentsProgramming experience with current Metasys versions (13.X) and legacy N2 systemsExpert knowledge of Metasys system architecture, including site director, network engines, and field-level controllersProficient in Metasys graphics development, database configuration, and control logic programmingUnderstanding of ASHRAE Standards 90.1, 62.1, and Guideline 36 (High-Performance Sequences)Working knowledge of BACnet protocolKnowledge of cybersecurity best practices for building automation systemsDual Posting:This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:PT3: Bachelor's and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent. The expected pay range for this level is $86,299 - $134,626PT4: Bachelor's and 6+ years of experience, or equivalent.
