Forge Consulting Group is seeking a Controls Engineer II to join a rapidly growing technology company specializing in advanced production equipment and nano-scale process automation. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a startup environment that values innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. The role reports directly to the Principal Engineer and focuses on developing automation, logic, and safety systems for complex production tools.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on programming, system integration, and problem-solving in a fast-paced, engineering-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and debug PLC logic using IEC 61131-3 languages, with a focus on Beckhoff TwinCAT structured text programming.
  • Design intuitive GUIs and HMIs following ISA-101 or SEMI E-95 standards.
  • Generate control narrative documentation for interlocks, control loops, and alarms.
  • Contribute to software sections of user manuals and standard operating procedures.
  • Execute design requirements for new software features and improvements.
  • Collaborate in cross-functional design reviews and integrate user feedback.
  • Specify, configure, and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, IO-Link, etc.).
  • Program safety control logic in accordance with HAZOP specifications.
  • Support commissioning and start-up of automated systems both in-house and at customer sites.
  • Provide remote software support and troubleshooting for deployed systems.
  • Follow best practices for version control and release management.
  • Work with R&D teams to optimize processes and improve usability.
  • Tune control systems to enhance performance across new process modules.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls Engineering (or related field).
  • 2–4 years of experience in controls programming, automation, or equipment design.
  • Strong experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT structured text programming.
  • Familiarity with Ignition, Allen Bradley Studio 5000, or Python is a plus.
  • Experience in designing and programming PLC and HMI systems across multiple platforms.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks and control panel design.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently and solve moderate engineering challenges.
  • Understanding of motion control systems (VFDs, motors, actuators).
  • Experience with servers, network protocols, and database architectures (e.g., OPC-UA, SQL).
  • Familiarity with industrial standards such as SEMI S2, SEMI E-95, ISA-101, ISA-88, and IEC 61131-3.
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and teamwork skills.
