Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of WSDOT, is the largest ferry system in the U.S. and safely and efficiently carries nearly 25 million people a year through some of the most majestic scenery in the world. The WSF system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands and internationally to Sidney, British Columbia. WSF has more than 1,800 employees throughout the Puget Sound region on vessels, in terminals, at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility, and at the headquarters facility in Seattle.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Control Systems Technician to perform the repair, and maintenance, of vital ship control systems. Systems include Steering, propulsion, alarm monitoring, HVAC, ground detection, power generation, and data logging aboard WSF vessels. These systems are mandatory for the safe operation of WSF Vessels and maintain compliance with statutory regulations.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Control Systems Technician will:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, test, calibrate, repair, maintain, and install shipboard systems.
  • Perform electrical and electronic work pertaining to WSDOT to the codes and standards.
  • Maintain compliance with ABS, IEEE, NEMA, NFPA, USCG CFRs, and OSHA.
  • Assists in the predictive/preventative maintenance.
  • Executes preventative maintenance activities.
  • Schedule routine and preventative work to be accomplished.
  • Document work accomplished on the Control System and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • This position responds to reports of failure or malfunction within the WSF system on a 24-hour emergency call-out basis.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Five (5) years of experience in the installation, testing, and repairing of complex distributed PLC-based control systems.
  • Working knowledge of Electrical Safe Work Practices, AC and DC electrical theory, power generation, reading electrical prints and control schematics, digital and analog control/monitoring, motor control, computer hardware and software configuration, data communication physical and software interfaces, Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems, and pneumatic and hydraulic control.
  • Fluency in Windows network configuration and device management.
  • Ability to use basic computer programs such as Microsoft Windows, Office, and Outlook.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC credential.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Experience with Marine/Shipboard systems.
  • Current ABYC Certification.
  • Associates Degree in Electrical/Electronics/Mechatronics Engineering; related work experience can substitute year-for-year for education preference; related military experience can substitute for education preference; or a combination thereof.

  • Respiratory questionnaire as required by the regulatory authority, and annual fit test, which may include the requirement to shave if necessary, to obtain a skin-to-rubber seal.
  • Pre-employment drug testing, and continued participation in a random testing pool for drugs and alcohol.
